AIPAC WELCOMES DR. NEVERS MUMBA’S RETIREMENT FROM ACTIVE POLITICS
The Acton Institute for Policy Analysis Centre (AIPAC) acknowledges and welcomes the decision by Dr. Nevers Mumba, former Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, to formally resign from active politics.
This development comes in line with the enactment of the Former Presidents and Vice Presidents Bill, now Act No. 16 of 2026, which was passed by Parliament in May. The law provides that former Presidents and Vice Presidents shall not engage in active politics or hold party positions once they leave office.
Dr. Mumba’s decision reflects respect for the rule of law and constitutional order. By stepping aside from partisan politics, he assumes the noble role of statesmanship, setting an important precedent for future holders of the highest offices in our land. His compliance with Act 16 demonstrates that Zambia’s democratic institutions are maturing, and that the principle of separation between statesmanship and partisan contestation is being upheld.
AIPAC emphasizes that the duty of former Presidents, Vice Presidents, and top government officials is to work with the Government of the day on assignments as may be requested by the President or relevant authorities. This ensures that their experience and wisdom continue to serve the nation, while preserving the dignity of the offices they once held.
We commend Dr. Mumba for his service to the nation and for his willingness to abide by constitutional requirements. We wish him all the best in his new role as a statesman, where his contributions can continue to strengthen Zambia’s democracy and unity.
