BETTY KATIKI CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF LIMA CONSTITUENCY MP KELVIN KAUNDA
Socialist Party (SP) Member of the Central Committee, Betty Katiki, has called for the immediate release of Lima Constituency Member of Parliament Kelvin Kaunda, emphasising the need for justice, equality and the fair application of the law to all Zambians, regardless of their political affiliation.
Ms Katiki has expressed support for Dr Fred M’membe’s call for justice and equality before the law, stressing that belonging to the opposition is not a crime and should never be a reason for persecution or unfair treatment.
She has expressed concern that Mr Kaunda has spent more than Ten (10) days in custody despite the case being bailable and sureties reportedly having already been made available.
She questioned the continued detention under these circumstances and called for the matter to be handled in accordance with the law.
Ms Katiki has also urged the Zambia Police Service to honour the commitment made by President Hakainde Hichilema following his election victory in 2021, when he assured Zambians that no one would spend more than 48 hours in custody where an offence was bailable or bondable.
She further recalled the commitment that individuals would not be arrested merely to facilitate investigations.
She emphasised that the law must be applied fairly and consistently, without discrimination based on political affiliation, and that every citizen deserves equal protection under the law.
Ms Katiki commended Dr Fred M’membe for clearly speaking out on the need for justice and equality in Zambia, stressing that the rule of law must be upheld and the rights of all citizens respected.
She reiterated that justice must never be selective, and no Zambian should be subjected to unfair treatment simply because they belong to the opposition.
