CLINTON ACCUSES TRUMP OF ABANDONING UKRAINE AND EMBRACING PUTIN

“I’m tired of the way we treat our allies like dirt.”

Former President Bill Clinton has sharply criticised Trump’s treatment of Ukraine, accusing him of following through on a threat to abandon Kyiv and embrace Putin again.

Those words carry particular weight from the president who signed the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, under which the United States, Britain and Russia gave Ukraine security assurances as it relinquished the nuclear arsenal inherited from the Soviet Union.

For Ukrainians, that history remains painfully relevant. They gave up nuclear weapons. Russia subsequently invaded. The credibility of international commitments is now being tested through decisions about weapons, intelligence, sanctions and the conditions proposed for peace.

Clinton’s remarks express a frustration that reaches beyond Ukraine: what does an American commitment mean if a change of administration can leave a partner questioning whether Washington still stands behind it?

His criticism deserves attention. But Ukrainians need that concern translated into action—air defences that arrive, reliable support and diplomacy that protects their freedom.

Speaking against abandonment matters. Preventing it matters more.
