Commentary Urges Egyptian Army to Stay Out of Yemen War, Warns of Risks to Red Sea and Suez Canal

The Egyptian army has been urged to avoid involvement in the Yemen war, with critics arguing that Egypt faces greater strategic threats, particularly from Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), than from Yemen.

The statement alleged that Egypt’s leadership could be drawn into the conflict to protect Saudi financial deposits, which it claims President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his family have benefited from.

It also warned that even a single drone or missile targeting Egyptian ports along the Red Sea or the Suez Canal could expose Egypt to serious military and economic consequences, potentially benefiting Israel strategically.

Addressing the Egyptian military, the statement argued that the GERD poses a far greater threat to Egypt’s national interests than Saudi financial assistance.

It further maintained that Yemen poses no significant threat to Egypt and cautioned Cairo against becoming entangled in a prolonged and costly conflict.

The statement concluded by blaming the war’s outbreak on what it described as the recklessness and personal ego of the leader who initiated it, warning Egypt against being dragged into a conflict that could undermine its national security.
