CSOS DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY CALL

THE Consortium of CSOs on Governance and Constitutionalism has distanced itself from suggestions that civil society organisations are calling for the formation of a Government of National Unity.

Consortium Chairperson Isaac Mwanza says neither the Consortium nor himself has made such a proposal.

Mr. Mwanza says President Hakainde Hichilema won the 2026 presidential election with 60 percent of the vote, a result which he says was also confirmed by the Consortium’s Parallel Vote Tabulation.

He says calls for a Government of National Unity are therefore baseless and unsupported by both law and facts.

Mr. Mwanza says the Consortium instead supports President Hichilema’s call for national unity, reconciliation and healing, urging Zambians to embrace the message regardless of political affiliation.

He says the Consortium also called for the release of detainees in line with the rule of law, welcoming recent court decisions granting bail to some detainees.

Mr. Mwanza has further urged the Police and courts to uphold the President’s position on bail for bailable offences and expedite trials.

He says the 2026 election has demonstrated that democracy has won in Zambia.
