The latest provisional results from South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections show the Democratic Alliance (DA) leading in six of the country’s eight metropolitan municipalities, putting the party in a strong position across several major urban centres.

Here is how the metros are shaping up:

🔵 1. Cape Town: DA leads with 61.0%, ANC follows with 9.7%, while the Patriotic Alliance (PA) has 3.9%.

🔵 2. Nelson Mandela Bay: DA is ahead with 44.4%, ANC has 26.0%, and EFF records 5.3%.

🔵 3. Johannesburg: DA leads with 40.5%, followed by ANC at 17.3% and ActionSA at 15.5%.

🔵 4. Tshwane: DA stands at 32.5%, ActionSA follows with 22.8%, while ANC has 21.8%.

🔵 5. Ekurhuleni: DA leads with 29.4%, ANC has 22.4%, and ActionSA records 18.4%.

🔵 6. Mangaung: DA is ahead with 36.4%, ANC follows closely at 31.4%, while EFF has 8.0%.

🟢 ANC – Buffalo City: The governing party is leading with 42.1%, followed by UDM at 18.0% and DA at 16.9%.

🟣 MK Party – eThekwini: MK Party is in front with 43.4%, DA has 21.0%, and ANC stands at 17.1%.

THE BIG POLITICAL PICTURE

The DA is currently leading in six metros, demonstrating significant support in major urban centres. The ANC remains ahead in Buffalo City, while the MK Party has established a strong lead in eThekwini.

ActionSA is also making its presence felt in Gauteng, particularly in Ekurhuleni and Tshwane. Meanwhile, the EFF remains among the leading contenders in Mangaung and Nelson Mandela Bay.

However, leading a metro does not automatically mean controlling its council. The final seat allocation and coalition negotiations will determine who governs where no party wins an outright majority.

These figures are provisional, based on the results available at 09:00 on 6 November 2026. Counting and verification are still underway.

Is this the beginning of a new political era in South Africa’s metropolitan
