Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar has won a fifth term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, CBS News and other outlets projected late Tuesday, defeating Republican John Nagel in the heavily Democratic Minneapolis-area seat.

Unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State showed Omar with about 76.5% of the vote (roughly 262,700–263,000 votes) to Nagel’s 16.2% (about 55,700–55,800), with Independent DeVelle L. Jackson taking around 7%. All or nearly all precincts had reported.

Omar, a Somali-born refugee and the first Somali American in Congress, has held the seat since 2019. She is a frequent target of President Trump, who recently demanded she resign after a Justice Department filing referred to her by another name and revived longstanding (and denied) allegations involving her identity and past marriage. Trump has attacked her since 2019, including telling her to “go back.”

In mid-October, federal agents raided her Washington-area home as part of an investigation into alleged immigration issues tied to childhood paperwork. Omar called it a weaponization of law enforcement against political enemies and said she had done nothing wrong. No charges had been filed.

On election night she wrote: “Thank you, Minnesota! … We will not allow Trump to silence us.” The win came in one of the most Democratic districts in the country.
