ECZ BEGINS PROCESS TO ALLOCATE 40 PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION SEATS

By Edna Mwiimbi

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has begun the process of allocating the 40 new Proportional Representation seats in the National Assembly.

The Commission yesterday held an orientation meeting with the two qualifying political parties, the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity and the United Party for National Development, on the distribution and submission of party lists for the seats.

The 40 seats, introduced under the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Act No. 13 of 2025, are reserved for 20 women, 15 youths and five persons with disabilities.

The seats will be allocated to qualifying political parties in proportion to the valid votes obtained by their presidential candidates at national level, using a quota-based formula prescribed by law.

During the meeting, the ECZ explained the procedures for submitting party lists and emphasised the need for political parties to comply with constitutional and electoral requirements.

The meeting was held at the ECZ Head Office.
