ELECTION OF LUSANGAZI COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON NULLIFIED ON ACCOUNT OF FAKE G12 CERTIFICATE

THE Local Government Tribunal has nullified the election of the Patriotic Front’s Patrick Banda as Lusangazi Council chairperson.

Mr Banda’s election was petitioned by losing United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Fred Banda for allegedly using a fake Grade 12 certificate to file nominations during the delayed Lusangazi Council chairperson election.

The tribunal, sitting in Lusangazi, nullified Mr Banda’s election on grounds that he did not indeed possess a Grade 12 school certificate. However, Mr Banda has vowed to appeal to the Constitutional Court.“I’m not satisfied with the judgment and to me this judgment is politically motivated and I am appealing to the Constitutional Court tomorrow (today),” he said.

However, there was joy on the other side.“We have written a notice to the Electoral Commission of Zambia. Mr Patrick Banda was not supposed to participate in the election in the first place,” the petitioner said.

Mr Banda is currently facing criminal charges in court for impersonation for using someone else’s academic credentials. The Lusangazi Council chairperson election could not be held on August 12 following the death of the former ruling party’s candidate, William Banda, a month before the general election
