ELON MUSK FACES GREATER SCRUTINY OVER STARLINK AND STARSHIELD AFTER DEMOCRATIC VICTORY
Elon Musk poured nearly half a billion dollars into political efforts during this election cycle. It did not prevent Democrats from winning the House and Senate—and his companies’ role in Ukraine’s wartime communications could now face much tougher congressional scrutiny.
An inquiry is already underway. Senator Richard Blumenthal opened an investigation in October into restrictions on Ukraine’s access to Starlink and Starshield, seeking answers from Musk and the Pentagon about who authorized the changes, how they were implemented and their consequences for Ukrainian operations.
Blumenthal has requested documents and communications, with written answers due November 5. His inquiry concerns reports that restrictions disrupted Ukrainian missions and impaired capabilities used to intercept Russian drones.
Once the new Congress takes office in January, Democratic committee leaders will have stronger authority to pursue hearings, demand records and scrutinize government contracts. The investigation still has to establish responsibility, but the questions are already on the table.
For Ukraine, this concerns the reliability of communications that soldiers depend on to fight and survive. Who can restrict those services, under whose authority, and with what safeguards?
Musk’s spending bought an enormous political presence. It could not guarantee the election result—or prevent scrutiny of decisions affecting Ukraine’s defence.
