Ethiopia and Sudan Expel Each Other’s Diplomats in Consulate Closures
Ethiopia has closed the Sudanese consulate in the border town of Assosa and ordered the six diplomats stationed there to leave the country within 48 hours, a senior Ethiopian official told Reuters on Thursday. The official did not provide a reason for the decision
In response, Sudan’s government closed the Ethiopian consulate in the eastern Sudanese city of Gedaref and expelled the diplomats working there, according to two Sudanese officials who spoke to Reuters.
The reciprocal moves mark a sharp escalation in tensions between the neighboring countries. No further details on the underlying dispute have been released by either side.
