EUROPEAN SUPERMARKET FREEZERS HACKED TO 50C AS GEORGIA SHOPPERS STOCKPILE WATER AND TOILET PAPER

Shoppers in Alpharetta, Georgia were filmed piling carts high at Sam’s Club and Costco with water, toilet paper, and bulk goods, overlays on the video stating they were preparing for 90 days. Multiple reports claim the stores are running low on those basics as word spreads of disruptions overseas.

Overnight, hackers remotely raised the temperature of supermarket freezers and fridges to 50 degrees Celsius across stores in Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Estonia, and other European countries. A Stockholm store manager told reporters there had been a cyberattack and all freezers reached 50 degrees.

Similar attacks hit France weeks earlier, forcing stores to dump spoiled meat, dairy, and frozen goods worth hundreds of thousands of euros in some locations. Modern refrigeration units connected to the internet for remote monitoring proved easy targets.

Britain already told households to stock up on food and water after its government urged people to keep three days of non-perishable supplies ready for cyberattacks, extreme weather, or other disruptions. Bottled water, tinned goods, and batteries sold out in multiple supermarket chains within days of the advice.

These events show how quickly digital systems can disrupt physical food supplies. Connected freezers turned into spoilage machines overnight.

European governments are dealing with the damage while some American shoppers are already clearing shelves. Preparedness is not panic. It is the rational response when foreign actors demonstrate they can hit the systems that keep food cold and available.
