FDI URGES ZAMBIANS TO REJECT ISLAMOPHOBIA

Family Development Initiatives (FDI), a Muslim faith-based organisation, has urged Zambians to reject Islamophobia and approach differences with fairness and maturity.

FDI Team Leader Sheikh Yussuf Ayami said recent exchanges over Islamophobia were unfortunate and demonstrated prejudice, lack of understanding and ignorance of the Constitution.

He explained that differences in religious affiliation, ethnicity or race must never divide Zambians.

Ayami observed that citizens share a common national identity before being identified as Muslim or Christian, Tonga or Lozi, Black or White.

He noted that questioning anyone’s place in Zambia because of religion, ethnicity or race is unfair and contrary to constitutional values of equality, dignity and freedom.

Ayami advanced that a recent interfaith dialogue between the Zambia Federation of Muslim Organisations (ZAFEMU) and the Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ) raised legitimate concerns about land acquisition, labour practices, business operations and religious freedom.

He said those economic and regulatory questions must not be confused with religious identity.

Ayami affirmed that concerns about land, employment or business conduct should be addressed through the appropriate legal and regulatory institutions.

He emphasised that accountability must be based on conduct and evidence rather than religious affiliation or ethnic background.

Ayami said the joint communiqué that was produced out of the meeting was an important step but continued engagement beyond the initial dialogue was needed.

He noted that no Zambian should feel apologetic for contributing to national development through lawful enterprise, investment, employment creation, education or community service.

Ayami emphasised that Zambians must resist imported prejudices and protect the country’s heritage of peaceful coexistence.
