CRADLE IN HEAD TEACHER’S OFFICE
….Bruno Mwiinde turns office desk into symbol of second chance

By DAVID KANDUZA
SILENCE falls over the headteacher’s office at Mumba Primary School for a very different reason: a tiny baby is sleeping soundly, rocked in the arms of the man who holds the keys to the school gates.

Headteacher Bruno Mwiinde has swapped official paperwork for paternity duty, stepping in to care for the infant of a young Grade Seven pupil.

As the young mother sits inside the examination room wrestling with her papers, determined not to let motherhood close the book on her education, Mr Mwiinde stands guard outside the classroom—and over the future of mother and child.

For many young girls in rural communities, the arrival of a child marks a quiet, abrupt end to the classroom.

The pressures of childcare, societal judgment, and logistical hurdles often force them to choose between raising a family and chasing a certificate.

Not at Mumba Primary School.

By taking on babysitting duties right in the administrative office, Mr Mwiinde had sent a resounding, compassionate message to the Lupososhi community.

Education does not pause for life’s heavy curveballs and no child—or mother—should walk alone.

As the pen scratches against paper inside the examination hall, the soft hum of an educator holding a baby outside tells a bigger story of northern Zambia—one where community care meets quiet resilience, proving that sometimes, leadership wears an apron alongside a suit.
