HERE ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN MP.

1. A monthly salary of about K54,000.
2. A vehicle allowance of about US$80,000.
3. Approximately K2,500 sitting allowance for each sitting of Parliament.

4. Sitting allowances for parliamentary committees on which an MP serves.
5. A gratuity that can reportedly amount to K3–5 million after five years of service, depending on applicable terms and conditions.
6. Subsidised accommodation at the Parliament Motel.
7. Subsidised food, drinks and other services at Parliament and the Parliament Motel.

I wish all our 274 Members of Parliament well as they begin their tour of duty, once the President officially opens Parliament next month.

As you take your respective seats in that important House called the National Assembly, may you always remember that the privilege of serving in Parliament comes with a great responsibility.

Put the interests of the people and the nation first. Your decisions, debates and actions will have a direct impact on the lives of the people you represent.
