High Court stays nominations for Kawambwa Council Chairperson

Nominations for the by-election for Kawambwa District Town Council Chairperson that was supposed to be conducted on Tuesday, 20th August, 2024 has been stayed.

Kawambwa Council Chairperson Kalumba Chifumbe has sought the courts intervention to review the decision of the Electoral Commission of Zambia to declare his seat vacant.

The election was called for Wednesday, 18th September, 2024.

The ECZ claimed that the by-election in Kawambwa arose due to the conviction by the Courts of Law of the Kawambwa District Council Chairperson Mr. Kalumba Chifumbe of the Patriotic Front on 22nd July, 2024.

  1. The court has erred in fact and law. Keith Mukata’s seat was declared vacant upon his conviction.
Anyone found guilty by the court has his seat declared vacant. An appeal does not erase a conviction.
