HOME AFFAIRS PS SAYS NO NEED FOR ALARM OVER EXTENDED DETENTIONS
By Elesani Phiri
Ministry of Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo says there is no need for alarm when an arrested person is detained for more than 24 hours, stating that law enforcement agencies are aware of the constitutional provisions governing detention.
Responding to concerns over the continued prolonged detention of some individuals without being granted bail, despite continued applications for their release, Mr. Matembo explains that police require adequate time to investigate cases, gather evidence and establish the facts surrounding an arrest before taking suspects to court.
He says the duration of detention varies depending on the nature and complexity of the case under investigation and that officers must be allowed sufficient time to carry out their duties in accordance with the law.
Mr. Matembo maintains that police have no intention of violating the rights of individuals but must follow established procedures in holding suspects accountable for their alleged actions.
He has since assured the public that law enforcement agencies will continue to uphold the law and ensure that criminal justice is administered fairly to all citizens.
