How Chatunga Escaped Drug Charge, Mbanje Belonged To Friend

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, was released Friday after prosecutors dropped drug possession charges against him, while his friend appeared in court over 72 grams of marijuana.

Chatunga had been arrested alongside Max Mugaba after police allegedly discovered marijuana in a bag belonging to Mugaba during a vehicle search.

Prosecutors withdrew the charges against Chatunga during the vetting process, allowing him to leave court without facing trial.

His lawyer, Simbarashe Mukwekwezeka, said Chatunga had picked up Mugaba on his way to get a haircut and was unaware that his friend was carrying marijuana.

According to the lawyer, police stopped the pair because they were traveling in an unregistered vehicle.

Officers searched the vehicle and allegedly discovered 72 grams of marijuana in Mugabe’s bag.
