HUBRIS SYNDROME: THE BRAIN DISORDER FORMED BY POLITICAL POWER AND FAME

Hubris syndrome is an acquired behavior disorder triggered by possession of substantial power.

Political power doesn’t just change societies, it changes the human brain. Neuroscience research reveals that holding authority rewires neural circuits, influencing empathy, confidence, and decision-making. These changes are adaptive, but they carry risks if left unchecked.

Studies show that leaders often experience reduced activity in the medial prefrontal cortex, a region critical for perspective-taking. This “empathy gap” can make powerful individuals less sensitive to the emotions and needs of others. At the same time, power stimulates dopamine-driven reward pathways, reinforcing feelings of control and success. The result is heightened confidence and decisiveness, but also a tendency toward risk-taking and overestimation of one’s abilities.

Over time, political power can reshape attention and learning processes. Leaders may become more resistant to new information, contributing to ideological rigidity. These neural shifts are not permanent damage, they are the brain’s way of adapting to complex social hierarchies. Yet, they can entrench polarization and distance leaders from citizens.

For Zambia and beyond, understanding these brain effects is crucial. It explains why leaders may appear detached or overly confident, and why systems of accountability are essential. Practices such as mentorship, reflective dialogue, and deliberate empathy training can help leaders counteract the neurological downsides of power.

Ultimately, political power is both a privilege and a neurological challenge. Recognizing its impact on the brain allows societies to cultivate leadership that is confident yet compassionate, a balance vital for sustainable governance. You have heard.
