ESTONIA AND LITHUANIA PUSH BACK AGAINST PRESSURE TO ACCOMMODATE DICTATORS

“I am not going to hold back—Putin is a dictator who kills women and children.”

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal’s reported response to calls for softer rhetoric echoes the blunt resistance surrounding Lithuania’s refusal to reopen a Belarusian potash export route: “Fuck no.”

These were separate issues. Michal was defending Estonia’s assessment of Russia. The profanity came from an unnamed Eastern European official describing resistance to American pressure over Belarusian exports—not a formal Lithuanian statement about negotiations with Putin.

But the underlying position is consistent: countries living beside Russia and Belarus understand the consequences of accommodating their rulers.

Lithuania is resisting pressure to restore a valuable trade route for Lukashenko’s regime. Estonia is refusing to soften its description of Putin while Russian attacks continue killing Ukrainian civilians.

Their security concerns cannot be brushed aside because Washington wants a commercial agreement or more comfortable diplomatic language.

The Baltic states know that an honest assessment of the threat is essential to defending against it. Ukraine needs that clarity—and the continued support that turns it into action.
