The Government of Botswana should call its former president, Ian Khama, to order and remind him of the responsibility that comes with his former position as Head of State. At this stage of his life, he should demonstrate wisdom, maturity, and diplomatic responsibility in his public statements.
As Zambians, we stand firmly with President Hakainde Hichilema (HH), his Cabinet, and the leadership of our country. We strongly condemn the reported utterances by Ian Khama concerning our leadership. Former presidents should understand the importance of respecting the sovereignty of other African nations and maintaining the dignity of the offices they once held.
Ian Khama should conduct himself professionally and responsibly, as expected of a former Head of State. We therefore urge the Zambian Embassy in Botswana to seek clarification on his remarks and, where warranted, request an appropriate apology.
Africa needs former leaders who promote unity, peace, cooperation, and mutual respect—not statements that risk creating unnecessary tension between nations. Personal grievances or political differences should never take precedence over the interests of our continent.
Zambia deserves respect, and our President deserves the dignity accorded to the highest office in the land. We remain committed to defending our country’s sovereignty and supporting our national leadership while upholding the principles of diplomacy and African unity.
