THE Lungu family says in the event that President Hakainde Hichilema announces that he will not attend the burial of his predecessor, Edgar Lungu, they will travel to Zambia for the burial the following day
Family spokesperson Makebi Zulu said the burial impasse between the Zambian Government and the family can be resolved within 24 hours, provided the family’s wishes are respected.
“If today (last night) the President (Hakainde Hichilema) said, ‘I will not attend Mr Lungu’s burial. I will hand over to the Vice-President, and we will give him his full honours and all,’ tomorrow we would start off to come to Zambia. It is that simple,” Mr Zulu said last night when he featured on Emmanuel Mwamba’s EMV podcast.
Mr Zulu called for prayers for the Government to ensure that reason prevails over the impasse.
“That is why we are saying let us pray for the Government so that reason prevails over self or ego, and the wishes of the family are respected.
“We have to respect the widow and the family. As for threats of arrest if I return to Zambia, we have not committed any offence. Let’s stick to the truth. We are here, and we will protect that wish even if it means any of us going to prison for wanting to honour the wishes of ECL,” Mr Zulu, a lawyer and politician, said.
Mr Lungu died four months ago, on June 5, 2025, in South Africa, where he had gone to seek medical attention.
After his death, an impasse arose between his family and the Government, leading to a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha preventing the family from burying Mr Lungu in South Africa.
The court ruled that Mr Lungu should be repatriated to Zambia for burial in line with established protocols at Embassy Park, a decision the family is challenging in court.
There are also ongoing discussions outside court between the Government and the Lungu family in a bid to reach consensus over the disagreement.

Guess you want to break the Guinness book of world records by having the longest period before burial. Whenever you burry, how ever you burry, those are your issues.
What an insult from this Makebi Zulu. Are these the negotiations we were expecting to hear? To tell the Head of State to stay away, an issue which is not new and the Lungu family even lost in the Courts of Law. Let the matter drag in Court, we have moved on.

What I don’t understand are the people who support such characters like Mr. Makebi Zulu. It’s like they don’t know that such demands are actually usurping state power, NOT president HH, but the state itself, because whether one likes it or not, president HH is the current head of state carrying out functions of the state on behalf of the people of the Zambia. The problem is that some people myopically think they are punishing president HH, but they forget that they are planting a seed that will come back to bite them hard in the future. Some people forget that bitterness is actually eating away at them, not their perceived enemy. Bitterness is like someone drinking poison and expecting their enemy to die from it.
That’s the arrogance of Makobili Zulu and Esther Thief Lungu! They can hold on and bury whenever they want.
Why should burying a thief be so protracted? Esther and Toy boy Makebi Zulu may have murdered Lungu for the stolen money. They are splashing money now and enjoying themselves.
You have already kept it long enough.Do what pleases you most.But it is sad that today we look at taboo things as normal.You can imagine if someone did what you are doing for just three days in the 70s, he would not be alive when found.

Has the learned Counsel Makebi Zulu ever heard of the term “Respect for the dead”? Keeping any dead body, in this particular case, the body of a former Republican president and using it as a pawn is one of the worst sins in this world! Unheard of! Shame on the Lungu family for doing this, and allowing ECL’s body to remain in a morgue for this man’s selfish reasons ambitions!! If they think that this is something or somehow admirable, or there is some heroism in it, then God help them. A word of advice to Madam Esther: Not everyone has your best interests at heart. The Devil is a liar, and I’m sure you’re aware of that.
