ILHAN OMAR FACES DISQUALIFICATION AFTER DOJ NAMES HER ILHAN NUR SAID ELMI
Legal scholar Jonathan Turley just laid out the case that could end Ilhan Omar’s career in Congress. On Fox News he warned that if court documents are correct and her legal name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, then every ballot, FEC filing, and official form she signed as Ilhan Omar may be a false statement under federal law.
Turley was blunt. “If she was elected on false pretenses, if she violated federal election law, that would also put her seat in danger.” He added that members of Congress must use their real names on passports and official filings. “All of those types of filings come with a representation that they are true and accurate, and that can create potential legal problems.”
The Department of Justice has already used the name Ilhan Nur Said Elmi in recent court papers, listing “Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” only as an alias. Fox News sources familiar with the investigation say Elmi is her actual birth name. Omar’s office called the claim “completely false,” but the DOJ filing stands. President Trump has publicly demanded she be removed from office and disqualified from the ballot over the discrepancy.
This is not a minor paperwork issue. Federal election law and congressional rules require candidates and officeholders to provide accurate identifying information under penalty of perjury. If Omar ran and served under a name that was never legally hers, each sworn document could be a separate false statement. That exposure stretches from her first campaign through every House form she has signed since.
The name match also revives longstanding questions about her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a man whose surname is identical to the one now appearing in federal filings. Omar has repeatedly denied he is her brother. Federal agents recently searched her Washington home and seized her passport along with phones and computers. DNA evidence was reportedly collected.
House Republicans removed George Santos for far less. The same standard should apply here. If Omar was elected under false pretenses, her seat is in immediate danger. The truth is no longer hiding in anonymous tips. It is now in official court documents signed by the U.S. Attorney.
