Italy Plans to Bring Back Nuclear Power After Nearly 40 Years
Italy is moving toward the return of civilian nuclear power generation, nearly four decades after the country shut down its nuclear power plants.
The move comes as European countries continue to face energy-security challenges linked to the Russia–Ukraine war, volatile energy markets and concerns over dependence on imported energy.
Italy’s government has been working on legislation and plans aimed at creating a framework for the development of new nuclear power projects, with nuclear energy being presented as a potential source of reliable, low-carbon electricity.
The decision has also renewed public debate in Italy over the role of nuclear energy, including questions about energy security, costs, safety and the management of radioactive waste
Italy’s plans concern civilian nuclear energy for electricity generation and do not in themselves indicate preparations for nuclear weapons or an expectation of a nuclear war between NATO and Russia.
