Ken Griffin: France’s Socialist Dream Is the Nightmare I Fled in Chicago

Citadel founder Ken Griffin sat down and delivered a blunt warning to young Americans who still think European-style socialism is some kind of enlightened future. Living in Miami, he said the Democratic Socialists of America are not a national force. They are a regional bubble.

“The rise of the Democratic Socialists, I’m not so worried about. You know, it’s funny, I live in Miami. My friends who have connections or ties to the South don’t even—it’s not part of the vocabulary.”

When the interviewer suggested it was just a New York phenomenon, Griffin corrected the record. “It’s a New York, it’s an Illinois, it’s a Michigan, it’s a California bit of a bubble.”

Then he turned to the real evidence. France. The country that spends 60 percent of its GDP at the government level. The place the American left still holds up as the model of a rich safety-net society.

“If you want to look at where socialism leads you to, look at France this last weekend. It’s the socialist dream. The country spends 60% of its GDP at the government level. And yet their streets are awash in turmoil. It’s heartbreaking.”

Griffin has seen this movie before. From his windows in Chicago during the 2021 and 2022 unrest, he watched organized looting play out with industrial efficiency.

“Paris looked pretty damn similar to Chicago in 2021, 2022. I could look out my window down at the Dior store. They were very efficient. They would take a van, they’d drive right through the front glass, create a giant space, 50 people would run in, they could empty the store in about 300 seconds. All right? Like, we may be more efficient than the French, even at looting.”

The interviewer tried to dismiss France as an isolated case of a people who simply like to riot. Griffin rejected the dodge. This is not a cultural quirk. It is the logical outcome of a system built on taking.

“Paris, I think Paris should be a real wake-up call to every single young American. France is the dream that the left talks about. The liberal, safety net rich, socialist Europe. And here’s France. That dream, that dream is the nightmare I left from Chicago. That dream doesn’t belong in our country. You know, an economy, a society where it comes down to how much you can take from others. And they’ll first take your property and then they’ll take your personal rights. That’s not a society that we want to create in our country.”

Griffin left Chicago for a reason. The progressive experiment there produced exactly what high-tax, high-spending, soft-on-crime governance always produces: capital flight, boarded-up stores, and streets where property rights are optional. France is simply further along the same road. Massive government absorption of the economy has not created stability or prosperity. It has produced dependency, resentment, and periodic explosions of disorder.-DTP
