KENYANS REMEMBER RAILA ODINGA ONE YEAR AFTER HIS DEATH

Kenya is today, October 15, 2026, marking the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, one of the country’s most prominent political figures.

Popularly known as Baba, Odinga died on October 15, 2025, in India, aged 80, bringing to an end decades of political activism and public service.

A series of commemorative activities has been organised across Kenya, with the main memorial gathering scheduled for Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, where family members, political leaders, supporters and ordinary citizens are expected to pay tribute to his life and legacy.

The commemorations have included intergenerational discussions, prayers and candlelight ceremonies, reflecting on Odinga’s contribution to multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms and Kenya’s political development.

His widow, Ida Odinga, has called on Kenyans to put aside political differences and remember her husband as a man who championed peace and national unity.

Although he never became Kenya’s elected president despite several attempts, Odinga remained a central figure in the country’s political history, serving as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.

One year after his passing, his political legacy continues to be a subject of national reflection, particularly as Kenya approaches its 2027 general elections.
