As millions mourn the death of Zambia’s First President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, some residents of Mufulira District on the Copperbelt Province have recounted his exceptional skill as a teacher at a local school.

Joseph Menzu, a former pupil at Mufulira Mine Primary School who claims to be around 80 years old says he was not surprised that over a decade later Dr. Kaunda would lead the nation because of his firm stance on discipline and fairness in how he treated pupils at the school.

He says when he became head teacher in 1948 he ensured pupils at the school meant for African children that they were ahead in their ability to read, write and count because he seemingly envisioned that once empowered with knowledge, locals would have an upper hand in the struggle for freedom.

Mr. Menzu further recalls Dr. Kaunda would create bonfires at the school, an activity that drew curiosity and inspiration in the young to do better.

The former pupil laments and urged the young generation to safeguard the legacy of the founding father of the nation who promoted peace and unity beyond Zambia.
