LT GEN SYLVIA FIRED FOR LEAKING CLASSIFIED INFORMATION AS TRUMP VOWS LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES FOR PENTAGON LEAKERS
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s top military planner on the Joint Staff, over accusations he leaked classified information about the Iran war and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. A senior Pentagon official stated that Sylvia failed three polygraph exams questioning him about the leaks and that the extent of the leaking became so critical that immediate action was required to protect national security. The case has been referred to the Justice Department
President Trump made clear there will be more consequences. “We’re very much looking for leakers and she’s going to have big problems. Long-term problems,” Trump told reporters. He emphasized that the administration is actively hunting those who disclose sensitive information.
Sylvia, a 32-year Army veteran and former commander of the 101st Airborne Division, led the Directorate for Strategy, Plans, and Policy known as the J5. His removal is one of the highest-profile actions in Hegseth’s broader crackdown on leaks, which has included widespread polygraph testing of senior officials and tighter media access rules at the Pentagon. A Pentagon spokesman said the department took necessary personnel action to protect sensitive information after an extensive investigation by Air Force investigators and has zero tolerance for the unauthorized disclosure of classified material.
Leaking classified information puts American warfighters at risk and undermines military operations. Officials have stated that classified information is not personal property and that those who disclose it for personal, political, or professional gain betray the trust placed in them. The firing sends a direct signal that the days of unchecked leaks from inside the Pentagon are over. Prosecute to the fullest extent of military law. – DTP
