Lula Backers Torch American Flag and Chant “Out Trump” After Victory – Soros Millions Fuel Brazil’s Leftward Shift
Brazilian supporters of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva marked his re-election by burning the American flag and chanting “Fora Trump” in multiple cities during the campaign’s final stretch.
Videos and reports from São Paulo’s Avenida Paulista, Rio Branco in Acre, Manaus, Blumenau, and other locations show crowds applauding as the Stars and Stripes went up in flames, with chants targeting both Flávio Bolsonaro and US President Donald Trump.
Lula defeated Bolsonaro in the October 25 runoff by roughly 51.8 percent to 48.2 percent, according to Brazil’s electoral court, securing a historic fourth term. Bolsonaro has refused to concede, citing last-minute voting extensions.
These scenes come against a backdrop of heavy foreign funding into Brazilian progressive organizations. Gazeta do Povo and the Instituto Monte Castelo documented that George Soros’s Open Society Foundations transferred approximately R$605 million to groups operating in Brazil between 2016 and 2023. In 2023 alone, the foundation sent more than $31 million to 95 NGOs.
Recipients have advanced causes including drug decriminalization, abortion access, and reduced incarceration. Sleeping Giants Brasil, which organizes advertiser boycotts against right-leaning media, received hundreds of thousands of dollars in the same period. Groups such as Católicas pelo Direito de Decidir obtained funding specifically for reproductive rights advocacy.-DTP
