LULA THREATENS FLAVIO BOLSONARO WITH LEGAL PERSECUTION ON LIVE TV ONE WEEK BEFORE THE RUNOFF

Brazil’s socialist president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva used the first presidential debate of the runoff to deliver a naked threat of political persecution against right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro. With the October 25 vote just days away, Lula told the son of imprisoned former president Jair Bolsonaro that a loss would strip him of senatorial immunity and unleash a wave of investigations.

“You think you’ve already won, get ready because on the 25th you’re going to lose immunity and you’re going to have problems, because your life has a lot of inquiries that are now going to move forward. If your friends aren’t letting them move, now they will,” Lula declared on Band television. The statement left no ambiguity. Lula was promising that the legal machinery would be turned loose the moment Flavio no longer held office.

The exchange came amid accusations over the Banco Master scandal and the R$134 million Flavio sought from imprisoned banker Daniel Vorcaro for a film about his father. Lula claimed credit for putting Vorcaro behind bars while blaming the previous administration for elevating him. “You made him a banker and I made him a prisoner,” Lula said. Flavio fired back that the charges were selective and that Lula’s own family and allies faced far larger unanswered questions.

The pattern is familiar. Jair Bolsonaro remains imprisoned. His other son Eduardo is in the United States. Flavio, who finished the first round ahead of Lula with 47 percent of the valid vote, now faces the explicit prospect of coordinated inquiries once the protective shield of office ends. Lula’s words on national television made the sequence plain: defeat, loss of immunity, accelerated cases.

Supporters of Flavio saw the moment as confirmation that the race is not only about policy but about whether a conservative challenger can survive a system that has already jailed his father and now telegraphs the same treatment for the son.

With the runoff one week out and the candidates nearly tied in recent polls, the threat has sharpened the choice for voters who view the Bolsonaro family as the primary target of lawfare rather than ordinary justice.
