LULA’S JUSTICE SEIZES DEFEATED RIVAL’S PASSPORTS AND SPARKS BORDER HUNT FOR FLAVIO BOLSONARO

Hours after Flavio Bolsonaro lost the presidential runoff to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the senator to surrender every passport he holds within 24 hours and barred him from leaving Brazil. Federal Police officers stopped him on the street outside his father Jair Bolsonaro’s house, where the former president remains under house arrest, and served the order in plain view.

Flavio Bolsonaro recorded a video right after the encounter. “Today morning I went to visit my father. As you know, he is under house arrest. And when I was leaving, Lula’s Federal Police were at his door and in the middle of the street I was served with an order to hand over my passports and I am also prohibited from leaving the country,” he said. He tied the move to a comment his brother Eduardo had made days earlier suggesting Flavio should consider leaving if he lost.

“I never said that. Is that a reason to take my passport? Is that justice? This decision was made Sunday night right after the election result was announced. It was a political decision. I never thought of leaving the country. I will hand over my passports and fight this absurdity, which is a clear attempt to intimidate me, but nobody is going to silence me.”

The formal basis for the order is a sealed money-laundering inquiry that also targets lawyer Willer Tomaz, a friend of Flavio linked to betting companies. Investigators claim emails showed Flavio listed as a master user on a company account tied to Tomaz. Moraes also banned any contact between the two men and ordered a border alert in the federal system.

Flavio’s party later acknowledged the election result while saying questions about the process still needed proper debate. Flavio himself has not conceded.

By Tuesday, Brazilian Federal Police were checking border crossings amid unconfirmed reports from the Argentine site Infobae that Flavio had crossed into Argentina with an identity document and boarded a private jet. Argentine authorities have told Brazilian investigators there is no record of his entry. Allies continue to deny any flight.

The 24-hour deadline to surrender the documents has already passed without confirmation of compliance, according to Brazilian outlets.

The timing is hard to ignore. Moraes is the same justice who oversaw the case that put Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest and who has repeatedly targeted other figures in the family and the broader conservative opposition.

Markets reacted sharply the day after Lula’s narrow win, with the currency dropping and some financial stocks plunging as investors weighed the result and the immediate legal pressure on the defeated candidate.

Flavio Bolsonaro’s statement frames the passport seizure as election-timed intimidation rather than routine procedure in an ongoing inquiry. Brazilian authorities treat the border rumors as unconfirmed while continuing to enforce the travel ban.- DTP
