MAMBWE QUESTIONS KAUNDA’S CONTINUED DETENTION DESPITE SURETIES

LIMA Constituency resident and voter Isaiah Mambwe has questioned the continued detention of Member of Parliament Kelvin Kaunda despite the presentation of working sureties, urging authorities to uphold the rule of law.

Mambwe said Kaunda, an elected lawmaker and Seventh-day Adventist Church elder, was a respected community leader whose detention had raised concerns among his family, friends and constituents.

He said the allegations related to an incident reportedly occurring on August 7, 2026, adding that Kaunda had been formally charged with assault.

“The nation is fully aware of what is happening regarding the Lima Constituency petition and Honourable Kelvin Kaunda,” Mambwe said.

He questioned why Kaunda remained in detention and was transferred from Lubwa Community Police Post despite facing the same charge.

Mambwe disclosed that NRPUP MPs Danny Yenga, Dr Brian Chirambo and Gystave Chonde, representing Kabwata, Kwacha and Milenge constituencies, respectively, presented working sureties at Lusaka Central Police Station on October 15, 2026.

“What is even more concerning is that Honourable Kaunda has presented working sureties, including fellow Members of Parliament, yet he has still been taken to remand,” he said.

Mambwe appealed to the Human Rights Commission, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to ensure due process.

“We believe Honourable Kaunda should either be granted police bond, which he qualifies under the law, or be brought before the courts of law without unnecessary delay,” he said.

He urged authorities to protect Kaunda’s legal rights and ensure justice was administered fairly and transparently.
