Man (27) Earning £130k A Year in London Says He Still Feels “Broke”

A man earns £130,000 a year ($172,198). He says he still feels broke in London.

His name is Jaqs Nelson. He is 27. He is from Bromley, London. He works as a principal manager consultant.

He earns more than triple the UK average wage. But he has only saved £10,000 ($13,246).

He gets about £7,000 a month after tax ($9,272). He spends about £6,000 of it ($7,947).

He spends £3,000 on mortgage and bills ($3,973). This is for a three-bedroom property.

The rest goes on Uber and Deliveroo. It also goes on date nights and a gym membership.

That leaves him £1,000 to £1,500 a month ($1,324 to $1,986). He says it is not enough to feel comfortable.

He calls himself a HENRY. That means High Earner Not Rich Yet. His savings would only last 3 months if he lost his job.

His income is not stable. It changes with commission and bonuses.

He lost £70,000 before ($92,722). He invested in an Amazon FBA business. The business failed.

His costs went up after a breakup. In June 2024 he started renting alone. His rent went from £800 ($1,059) to £1,950 ($2,582).

He now has a new partner. They bought a house together. The move cost him £40,000 ($52,984). That covered stamp duty, legal fees and refurbishment.

They used the £5,000 deposit scheme ($6,623). They searched for 6 months.

He says buying alone on an average salary is almost impossible.

Despite owning a house, he does not feel wealthy. He has £14,000 in savings now ($18,544). He wants £28,000 by end of year ($37,088).

Since March, he puts £1,000 to £1,500 into investments each month ($1,324 to $1,986). He uses a stocks and shares ISA and premium bonds. He wants to increase it to £3,000 ($3,973)

He says people save for emergencies, not long-term.

He does not want to leave London. He says he is privileged. But taxes are high. Living is expensive.

He said: “If someone earned £130,000 you could live comfortably. But mine’s up and down. I can’t feel 100 per cent comfortable.” – Manchester News

  1. BUT you have NOT said where he comes if he doesn’t want to LEAVE London. YOU want him to leave to where?, New York, Acrra, LUSAKA or Abuja?
