MEDVEDEV AGAIN RAISES RUSSIA’S NUCLEAR OPTION

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev says Moscow reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in response to what it considers critical threats to Russia’s sovereignty.

In an interview with Vedomosti, Medvedev rejected the idea that Russia’s nuclear statements are merely warnings, pointing to the country’s nuclear doctrine and the circumstances under which Moscow could consider using nuclear weapons.

Medvedev also warned that strikes against Russian cities could trigger a major escalation, potentially leading to a Third World War. He said Russia has the capabilities to strike Kyiv as well as targets belonging to NATO.

At the same time, Medvedev described nuclear weapons as an “option of last resort”, saying Moscow wants to avoid a global catastrophe while warning that Russia’s “patience is not unlimited.”
