MILLENNIUM RADIO APOLOGIZES OVER A POST ANNOUNCING LEADERSHIP CHANGE IN UPND

The Facebook post in question featured a Mr. Patrick Banda who announced that he had assumed the party leadership of the UPND.

Mr. Banda justified the announcement on the basis that the mandate of UPND office bearers has already expired.

“We have been made aware that his comments were misleading and at variance with the law”, reads the apology.

Sounds reasonable. That’s what you expect to happen under normal circumstances.

If any of you felt weird by the announcement, it’s because no normal thinking and honest human being would accept that. It was downright weird.

If such a man held a convention, declared himself a leader, the Registrar of Societies wouldn’t, rightly so, accept him nor his papers.

I hear some UPND members are furious and threatening treason charges. Welcome to the world of pain! This is how normal people must feel and react.

This is exactly how PF members felt when the state legitimized a clearly and dubiously organized convention that purposely plunged it into dysfunctionality.

The pain inflicted on PF members was particularly severe because even the most illiterate villager could see the naked mingalato the state was playing.

But unashamedly, the state gave it legitimacy by deploying police protection around the venue of the convetion while the Registrar of Societies worked with lightning speed to effect a new list of office bearers.

If you thought the announcement by Patrick Banda bordered on insanity, that’s exactly how a lot of us felt about everything surrounding the role played by the state in the PF saga.

Given the vindictive nature of Zambian politics, I am afraid, what happened to PF will happen to UPND when it’s no longer in office.

What Patrick Banda did in those brief moments might as well be a dress rehearsal.

We all know the many times UPND has distanced itself from PF troubles. However, what matters is what its opponents believe.

And you know as well as I do that the opponent blames UPND for its dysfunctionality.

This means the opponent will be waiting at the next junction when UPND exits public office.

What will happen at that point, your guess is as good as mine.

One regular contributor on my page recently said, “I don’t care what these politicians do to each other as long as it doesn’t extend to us the citizens”.

Perhaps I should embrace the same attitude. How else do you deal with full-grown men (women are innocent in this madness) who take turns to bruise each other as if doing so was child’s play?
