MINISTER OF JUSTICE ASSURES LAZ COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENT’S SUPPORT
Minister of Justice, Hon. Princess Kasune, has assured the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) Council of Government’s continued support and collaboration in furthering the legal profession in the country.
The Minister of Justice expressed confidence that the relationship between LAZ and Government will grow to greater heights.
The Minister of Justice further, reiterated Government’s commitment to constitutional reforms and enhancing democracy in the country. She called on the civil society organizations, the church and other stakeholders to keep voicing their concerns on national issues.
The Minister was speaking when the LAZ Council paid a courtesy call on her to congratulate her on her appointment as Minister of Justice and also to introduce the new LAZ Council.
And LAZ president, Lungisani Zulu, observed that the Ministry of Justice is a key stakeholder in achieving LAZ’s mandate and expressed the association’s readiness to work and support the new Minister.
Here are some of the highlights:
The Minister of Justice informed LAZ Council Members that she operates on an Open Door Policy. And LAZ president, welcomed the idea for an open-door policy to ensure easy access and better communication between the Ministry and LAZ.
LAZ called on Government to come up with a roadmap for constitutional reforms.
The need to increase the number of judges and reform the Judges Act to raise the number of High Court judges to not less than 100 judges, as the current provision of 60 judges is insufficient.
LAZ proposed to introduce a Legal Profession Bill, aimed at modernizing the legal profession and enabling it to contribute more effectively to the growth and development of the country’s economy.
LAZ President, Mr. Zulu, expressed concern about the employment crisis for lawyers, and called on the Minister of Justice to consider creating more opportunities within government and other sectors to allow lawyers to serve and contribute to national development.
Mr. Zulu also requested Government to consider engaging local and Zambian lawyers in government contracts.
