MISS ZAMBIA 1974: SHE CHALLENGED MISS WORLD, LOST HER CROWN, BUT REFUSED TO BOW!

The Moth Media
In 1974, 18-year-old Christine Munkombwe did something that turned a beauty pageant into a national controversy:

She accused Miss World organisers of racial bias, arguing that black beauty was not receiving fair consideration.

The response from local promoters?

Take away her crown, trophy and K50 prize!

M&G Promotions, represented by Philip Singoyi and Churchill Mutale, withdrew her title and handed it to 16-year-old runner-up Mable Chipasha, a student at Ndola Dominican Convent School.

Christine was also asked to apologize publicly and faced demands to forfeit K3,563 in preparation expenses and donations.

But Christine was not about to exchange her dignity for a crown.

She accused the organisers of failing to prepare her properly, claiming they had not provided the promised evening gown, national dress or swimming costume.

She also complained about racial media coverage in London and alleged that the judges were biased.

Then came her unforgettable response:

“They can eat it and I will still remain the same old Christine Munkombwe I have always been.”

She further claimed she had been abandoned at the airport without even a ngwee, relying on her mother for pocket money.

THE IRONY?
A beauty queen was expected to smile, look beautiful and remain silent.
The moment Christine challenged the system, the crown suddenly became more important than the controversy surrounding it.

Whether her allegations were justified or not, Christine had made her position clear: she would not apologize simply to reclaim a title.

After all, what is the value of a crown if wearing it means surrendering your voice?
