Mnangagwa appoints Tagwirei to Zanu PF Politburo, demotes Obert Mpofu
HARARE — President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Senator Kudakwashe Tagwirei to the Zanu PF Politburo as secretary for economic affairs and investment promotion.
The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was announced by Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity Christopher Mutsvangwa.
It comes shortly after Tagwirei’s elevation to Cabinet as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion earlier this month.
In the same reshuffle, Obert Mpofu was removed from the Politburo and appointed to the party’s Council of Elders.
Mpofu had previously held positions including secretary for information and communication technology.
Former Gokwe-Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena was also returned to the Central Committee.
The changes were made in accordance with the Zanu PF Constitution, specifically Articles 7, 8 and 9, which govern appointments to the Central Committee, Council of Elders and Politburo.
Tagwirei, a businessman and founder of Sakunda Holdings with interests in energy, mining and agriculture, was co-opted into the Central Committee in late 2025 and appointed to the Senate in August 2026.
He has been described as a close ally of Mnangagwa.
The appointments were reported on Thursday amid preparations for the ruling party’s 23rd Annual National People’s Conference.
