North Korea Suspected of Major Cyberattack Targeting South Korean Financial Sector

South Korea has reportedly ordered urgent security checks at banks amid suspicions that North Korea is behind a major cyberattack targeting the country’s financial sector.

Several major financial institutions, including Hana Bank and Shinhan Bank, have reportedly reported significant personal data leaks affecting tens of thousands of customers.

The suspected cyber offensive comes amid heightened tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang, following South Korea’s recent demand for an apology over a new border incident and a series of military provocations.

Although the IP addresses associated with the suspected activity reportedly route through overseas servers, South Korea’s ruling party has pointed to Kim Jong Un’s regime as a possible culprit.

North Korea has long been accused of conducting cyber operations against foreign financial institutions to generate revenue and support its weapons programs, including its nuclear and ballistic missile development.
