Norway Seizes Russian Research Vessel Over $4.22 Billion Ukraine Compensation Claim
Norwegian authorities have seized the Russian research vessel Professor Molchanov in Svalbard following a court order requested by Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz.
The action is part of efforts to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award against Russia over the seizure of Naftogaz assets in Crimea following Russia’s 2014 annexation of the peninsula.
The vessel was detained in Barentsburg after a reported standoff with the Norwegian Coast Guard and will remain in Svalbard while the legal process continues.
Naftogaz said Russia cannot avoid the international arbitration award by refusing to pay and pledged to continue pursuing Russian assets abroad.
Moscow has condemned the seizure and indicated that it will challenge the decision through legal and diplomatic channels.
The case marks a significant new development in international efforts to enforce compensation claims against Russian state-linked assets.
