Zim Toes dealer Arrested As Toes Craze Hits Zimbabwe

0

A dealer from Harare’s infamous Ximex Mall is ruing the day he made a viral video claiming to have information on where people can sell their toes for big bucks.

David Kaseke also known as Zhula, claimed to be an agent of people buying toes for thousands of dollars. He even went on to claim that the human toes range between US$25 000 and US$75 000. Kaseke appeared in court on Tuesday to answer to criminal charges for his claims.

As if sensing his claims would get him in hot water, Kaseke recently changed the story and claimed he was under the influence of alcohol when he spoke to lifestyle tabloid H-Metro. Kaseke said:

I never thought the video was going to be published on social media. I guess I had too much to drink and it never crossed my mind that journalists are always serious with their work. I had a tough day after the video went viral, and I want to apologise to my counterparts for agreeing to say what I said on camera

As a result of David Kaseke’s claims, other dealers at Ximex declared last Saturday as a ‘Sandals Day’ to prove that they still have their toes. Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Kindness Paradza even went as far as going to Ximex to investigate if the dealers were indeed selling off their toes.

The arrest of Kaseke a self-proclaimed zvigunwe buyer located at Ximex comes after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said they were investigating possible trafficking of human body parts following social media reports that people are selling their toes in exchange for riches and luxurious lives. The police added that they would arrest those found soliciting, selling and buying human body parts.

The rumours on toe selling gained so much traction and blew up on social media, resulting in a barrage of memes and jokes about the issue. Unverified screenshots doing the rounds on WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook suggest that some sell their toes for as much as US$40,000 for the big toe, US$25,000 for the middle toe and US$10,000 for the tiny toe.

President Putin loses his 50th colonel of Ukraine invasion after two Russian generals were killed in one day

Russia has lost its 50th colonel of the war in Ukraine days after two Russian generals were killed in one day.

Artillery commander Lt Col Vladimir Nigmatullin, a 46-year-old father-of-three from Yekaterinburg, was killed on May 31, Daily Mail reports.

His death has been confirmed by his family, adding to the huge growing list of casualties of Russia’s military leaders, with one colonel killed every two days.

Nigmatullin’s sister-in-law Marina Konyukhova said: ‘Eternal memory, darling, dear, much-loved man, you passed away.

‘We still cannot believe you are gone. You are a father of three children, and an amazing husband to my sister.

‘I am always proud of you, and I will always be proud. You set an example to the Motherland, so that everyone does like you did.

‘You were ordered with the Order of Bravery, posthumously. You went through a lot of conflict areas.’

His death comes after Vladimir Putin lost two of his most senior commanders in a single day in a devastating bridge ambush in eastern Ukraine, a group of independent journalists claimed.

On Sunday June 5, Russia confirmed the death of Major-General Roman Kutuzov. The next day, it was claimed Lieutenant-General Roman Berdnikov was also killed on the same day in an attack carried out by Kyiv’s forces, taking the death toll of generals to 12.

Kutuzov was the chief of staff of the 29th Combined Arms Army and was awarded a posthumous promotion to Lieutenant-General. He died in an ambush in Donbas.

‘He calmly walked up the career ladder, successfully commanded the troops, and died as a soldier, fighting on the front lines,’ said a report by Readovka.

One mourner said: ‘I knew him personally, Roman lived a hero and died a hero.

‘My condolences to his loved ones, strength and patience to his subordinates and fellow officers.’

The claims that both Berdnikov and Kutuzov died came from the Volya Telegram channel which has independent war journalists working on both sides of the conflict.

‘On the morning of June 5, Lt-Gen Roman Berdnikov, who led the Russian troops and units of the DPR from Donetsk, left with the headquarters on a working trip,’ said the post. ‘On the way, presumably on a bridge, the vehicles of the headquarters were attacked by a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group.’

Part of the convoy was ‘destroyed or immobilised’ but some vehicles, ‘having received serious damage and firing back, were able to escape from the ambush and leave,’ the post said.

‘After that, our sources reported that Roman Berdnikov died in this battle,’ the report continued. ‘A little later, two more sources confirmed this, specifying that other senior officers could have died during the battle.’

Jewish scholar charged with raping seven female followers ‘after convincing them he had special powers that could mend their impurities’

A Jerusalem rabbi has been charged with raping seven of his followers after telling them he had special powers that could mend their impurities’

Rabbi Moshe Yazdi, 59, told the women he had special powers and could help them by ‘descending to their impurity’, convincing them he was acting within Jewish law, it has been claimed.

On Monday, June 6, he was indicted for the alleged attacks spanning a decade in Givat Ze’ev, following his arrest on April 27.

The religious leader also convinced the women to give him thousands of shekels based on his fraudulent claims, the indictment says.

He has been indicted of alleged rape through fraud, sodomy through fraud, indecent acts through fraud, causing rape and indecent acts through fraud, fraudulently receiving items, and money laundering, the Times of Israel reported.

Police said he even attacked some of the women on the day of their weddings.

Yazdi told the women that sins had left ‘sparks of impurity’ inside them that could only be purified through sex acts with him, prosecutors said.

He then told each of the alleged victims they had special souls and must not tell anyone of his acts.

The money they gave him was deposited in a number of bank accounts under different names to hide the transactions, it is claimed.

The rabbi said he was one of only 36 righteous people who ensured the continued existence of the world according to some Jewish decisions.

These claims helped convince his followers to obey each of his vile demands, police said.

Yazdi said he could communicate with dead rabbis and the Divine Presence when talking to his followers, the indictment claims.

The first complaints against him were made in 2004 when a rabbinic court banned him from teaching, meeting, or advising women.

In 2007, an alleged victim reported him to police and in 2016, he was convicted under a plea bargain after he tried to flee the country despite a bailiff order.

Yazdi served as a rabbi in the Amudei Hashalom (Pillars of Peace) community in Bukharim since the 1990s and also led their nonprofit organisation.

In his daily lessons, he taught the concept of ‘cancelling the mind’, meaning giving up intellectual or personal thought and instead subscribing only to the values and principles from the Torah.

“Suspend Ramaphosa “, top politician instructs Parliament in an explosive letter

I doubt if President will survive the scandal that is currently on everyone’s mind. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what should happen to President Cyril Ramaphosa following the criminal charges laid against him by former SSA DG Arthur Fraser. Several people have adequate calls for Ramaphosa to step down.

As pressure mounts on President Cyril Ramaphosa over his role in covering up the robbery at his Phala Phala farm in February 2020, an opposition party leader wants him suspended while a probe is under way. On Monday, General Bantu Holomisa, wrote an explosive letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. In the letter, Holomisa is demanding that the matter be probed while Ramaphosais on suspension. Holomisa is an anti-corruption crusader who leads the UDM (United Democratic Movement). Holomisa wants parliament to investigate allegations that President Cyril Ramaphosa may be complicit in alleged criminality after the theft of millions of dollars at his Phala Phala farm in 2020.

According to Holomisa, the allegations agains the Head of State have been greatly destructive of the country’s image. The country’s image has even dented both at home and abroad, and this may affect investor confidence negatively. Ramaphosa has always been perceived as the champion of good governance and now this bomb has burst over his very own head. In my opinion, Holomisa is right. We don’t want investors to view us as a corrupt country and pull out their investments. That would be a serious blow to the economy.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa has maintained that his hands are clean. Delivering his key note address at the closing of the ANC Limpopo conference, he said it was clear this was part of a political agenda. Ramaphosa is adamant that “dirty politics” were behind allegations that he was involved in crime. The President says he has never stolen money from anyone…”be it our taxpayers, be it from anyone, I’ve never done so. I’ve never stolen money from taxpayers. My integrity as a leader will never allow me to do so.”

Holomisa doesn’t buy Ramaphosa’s explanation on the matter. He said he was turning to parliament given the alleged involvement of the police and the SSA in covering up the matter, but also because parliament has a constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight on the executive. Holomisa says retired judges should be appointed to investigate the matter. Looks like there are no thinkers in the UDM. This is now a matter that is in the hands of the courts. The NPA will establish the truth about the allegations and act accordingly. Why should every challenge in SA be referred to retired judges? Are they the paragons of virtue?

Holomisa insisted that the President should be given a short “sabbatical leave”. But why a “short sabbatical” though? Isn’t the policy for one to step aside as soon as allegations are made? Just asking for a friend who is new to SA politics.

Thabo Mbeki, Joachim Chissano to grace KK’s first anniversary

By Kombe Mataka

FORMER South African president Thabo Mbeki will this month give a lecture on Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s contribution to Zambian political life.

The event that has been organised by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Kenneth Kaunda Children of Africa Foundation (KKCAF), will be held under the theme “Kenneth Kaunda and Ethical Leadership”.

CPD executive director Caroline Katotobwe said the public lecture would be preceded by a colloquium.

“We are pleased to announce that Zambia will be hosting two VVIP guests to grace this two-day exhibition of Dr Kaunda’s works, writings, videos and other memorabilia depicting his life and work, an academic colloquium and a public lecture. The first day will showcase the colloquium or a seminar to be held on 29th of June and shall involve five – six academic presentations on the life of Dr Kaunda,” she said.

The papers would cover several themes including Kaunda the man; Kaunda on Peace and Liberation of Southern African Region; Kaunda in Zambian History; Kaunda and Industrial Democracy; and Kaunda’s Humanism.

The colloquium will be opened by former Mozambique president Joachim Chissano.

Katotobwe said the second day would include a memorial public lecture to be delivered by Mbeki.

“Both leaders hail from countries that Zambia, through Dr Kaunda during the one-party-state helped to liberate while they endured European imperialism and apartheid. As you may be aware, Zambia hosted the liberation movements to help liberate much of the SADC region,” said Katotobwe. “We are delighted to inform the nation, through the media that this two-day exhibition will be open to the public. The colloquium and public public lecture will be open to the public by special invitation and ticket only. 500 people will be invited to both the academic colloquium and the public lecture. Entrance will strictly be by ticket or special invitation.”

Tourism permanent secretary Evans Muhanga said the memorial lecture would enrich the country’s social economic history and political heritage.

“It also offers the country an opportunity to be developed into a tourism product with benefits accruing to the present and future generations. It is possible that some of our current generations within and outside Zambia may not have heard or even comprehend the benefits of epitomising the life and legacy of KK,” he said.

Muhanga announced the ministry was envisaging establishing a Kenneth Kaunda Memorial Museum to preserve his legacy for posterity.

And CPD board chairman Neo Simutanyi said Mbeki was the best to grace the event.

“We have asked another icon, His Excellency Thabo Mbeki, the second president of South Africa to come and speak on the inaugural public lecture on ethical leadership. I am sure you agree with me that Thabo Mbeki also exhibited ethical leadership. During his time Thabo Mbeki fired his vice-president, Jacob Zuma. One Jacob Zuma who was named in some scandal,” said Dr Simutanyi. “He went on to be president but was removed because of the same issue of not displaying ethical leadership. I think up to now Jacob Zuma is still appearing in court. So there is no better person to have come to grace this occasion.”

Shiwang’andu MP Stephen Kampyongo Acquitted

KAMPYONGO AND FIVE OTHERS ACQUITTED

…..Uwingila mumushitu tomfwa inswaswa……

Chinsali, 7-06-2022 SMARTEAGLES

The Chinsali Subordinate Court has today acquitted former Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo and five others on one count of Endangering the Safety of an Aircraft contrary to section 8 (c ) and (f) of the Safety of Civil Aviation Act CAP 445 of the Laws of Zambia.

The Particulars of offence were that Andrew Kampyongo, Stephen Kampyongo, James Nsunge Mulenga, Cephas Mwamba Matumbo, Phillip Sinkala, Ignatius Musonda and Augustine Kapolyo on 2nd January 2015 in Shiwangandu jointly and whilst acting together, did conduct themselves in a manner to endanger the safety of an aircraft.

Delivering the ruling this morning Magistrate Julius Malata said the State could not provide evidence linking Hon. Stephen Kampyongo, Mr. James Nsunge Mulenga, Mr. Cephas Mwamba Matumbo, Mr. Phillip Sinkala, Mr. Ignatius Musonda and Mr. Augustine Kapolyo to the 2nd January, 2022 incident.

On the other hand the magistrate mentioned that a Journalist herein as witness from the prosecution during his testimony made no mention of names of people who were spotted on the scene but later 6 years down the line the journalist gave a different recount of events to Officer Mudenda who was in October of 2021 assigned to investigate the Helicopter incident that took place in 2015.

The Magistrate Malata further stated that the prosecution was to adduce evidence that the accused persons did an act to an aircraft. The prosecution to this effect availed 12 witnesses before the court but all failed to place the Parliamentarian and five others at the scene.

However, based on the evidence produced by the Prosecution and witnesses Magistrate Malata found Andrew Kampyongo with a case to answer.

Meanwhile, the court questioned the prosecution on why the witness Martin Mulenga a former PF Councilor who according to his own statement said he was with Andrew Kampyongo in the said vehicle that was seen at Kalalantekwe School grounds during the incident but was not a co accused as under the law the former councillor is an accomplice to the case.

Andrew Kampyongo has since been placed on his defence and will appear in Court on July 7, 2022.

IN ALMOST A YEAR, UPND HAS DONE NOTHING- FORMER PF SG MWILA

IN ALMOST A YEAR, UPND HAS DONE NOTHING- FORMER PF SG MWILA.

FORMER PF secretary general Davies Mwila says his party did a lot while in government but it was still still voted out of power, and the same can happen to UPND which has actually not done anything.

Commenting on Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali’s remarks that Zambia would be a paradise in the sub-region and on the continent owing to the new dawn government’s programmes, Mwila said talking about promises would not help the UPND.

“People want to see real things. They want to see the price of fertiliser coming down, they want to see the price of mealie meal reduce to K80 at least. If they are talking about promises, that will not help them. I can tell you that we were in government as PF for 10 years and we saw how the reaction was from the Zambia people. We did a lot and we were removed, what about them who have not even done any roads? It will be a disaster for them. Let them continue talking about theories but let them go on the ground and hear what is prevailing,” he said.

“They should know, what are the complaints by the people? Honeymoon is gone. They have to tell us what they have done and not what they will do. What are they going to do? They are already in government. They wanted power. Former president Edgar Lungu handed over power peacefully to them and they have to take advantage and ensure that they deliver the promises to the Zambian people. That is what Zambians are waiting for. Which paradise are they talking about? Do they know what they mean? It is like saying Zambia will be like London, is that possible looking at the way they are moving or running this country?”

Mwila said the UPND should know that they were now in government and not in opposition.

“Those are politics and Zambians are tired of promises. It is high time they start putting food on the table because the Zambian people have said they will not eat theories. People want to see the actual things like roads and schools. Moreover, they want the government to improve the living standards of people. The economy as at now is very bad and the people of Zambia are complaining because everything including commodity prices is high. So people are crying and the government must come in to help people. If Tayali and his people will continue promising people, I think we are not going anywhere. I think this is the time that our leaders have to know that they are now in government and not in opposition,” he said.

“They need to start implementing what they promised the people of Zambia because time is running out. It is almost a year but if you ask them what they have done, it is nothing. There is nothing apart from reducing caderism but if you look at the trend caderism is coming back. They have not paid much attention to that. Look at the cadres who went to the Magistrate court. They have started playing to the gallery. They mobilised people to go and protest in Chililabombwe that they want Vedanta but who really wants Vedanta? It is the same people who organised people in Luapula to go and protest about FTJ University. Those are things that we have been through and we expect them to bring new things, not what PF was doing. Those are the things they condemned us for.”

Meanwhile, Mwila said the UPND government was actually recruiting teachers and health workers based on the schools and hospitals left by PF.

“Where have they started constructing roads? They are doing the recruitment of teachers and they are using the schools that we left. They are recruiting nurses and doctors and they are using hospitals and clinics that we left. So it is high time they are told that they have to start implementing what they promised the people of Zambia and not theories. Zambia will never be paradise looking at the trend and at the pace they are moving. Ask them where they are going to get the money to do the roads. They are dealing with Britain and America who are broke and do not have the money. Who is going to give them money to build roads, hospitals, clinics, secondary schools and universities? Zambia will never be paradise as long as the UPND continues running this country. Let them be practical,” said Mwila.

ZNBC SHAKE UP: Grevazio Zulu Primed For DG; Kalani Muchima Eying Same Post… PF Strongman, Kennedy Bwalya, Transferred To Livingstone

ZNBC SHAKE UP: Grevazio Zulu Primed For DG; Kalani Muchima Eying Same Post… PF Strongman, Kennedy Bwalya, Transferred To Livingstone

Seasoned ZNBC journalist Grevazio Zulu is among the top contenders for the position of Director General at the national broadcaster.

Grevazio has crafted his own niche and many conservative senior citizens, and independent voices view him as a mature, consistent and professional scribe who has not easily aligned himself with the politics that engulf the institution and therefore deserves the appointment.

It is also believed that Grevazio has a favorable rating with his peers and the union at the institution which is crucial to harmonizing the operations.

However, the long serving journalist who is prominent for the Sunday Interview is being threatened for the top spot by UPND cadres like Kalani Muchima who have been frequenting State House to secure the appointment.

Muchima has been holding a series of meetings with State House Director of Communication Clayton Hamasaka so he could be appointed to the top position.

Other than a few UPND packages which were seen as fearless by the now ruling party, Kalani does not have a credible history of holding senior managerial position to handle the pressure and scale of responsibilities that come with being ZNBC DG.

Many believe should Kalani get the top ZNBC position, the culture of the institution staying the way it has always been is highly likely.

Kalani has a humble journalism pedigree with most of his experience at Prime TV being a junior reporter.

Other than Kalani, Grevazio is facing stiff competition from Diamond TV Chief Visionary Officer Costa Mwansa.

President Hakainde Hichilema has not hidden his affinity for Costa often describing him as a creative and industrious journalist behind closed doors.

President Hichilema is equally impressed with how Costa has transformed Diamond TV into an attractive and impressive media house having only been a Muvi TV employee less than 10 years ago.

But President Hichilema does not want to pick or influence the appointment of Costa and would rather the Jackson Kalala led board do an independent job to appoint the new ZNBC DG.

There are other positions vacant at ZNBC which include Director of Programmes previously held by Rose Chumpuka. Chumpuka had an extremely close relationship with fifth Republican president Michael Sata. There has been no explanation as to why her contract was not renewed.

Another position vacant is that of Director of Finance and Director Human Resource.

In the newsroom, Kennedy Bwalya – a well known PF strongman at Mass Media – is lucky to survive the chop.

However, he will no longer parade his green heart in the newsroom but has been given an opportunity to reform with an appointment as Head of the ZNBC Office in Livingstone.

Recently, civil society leader and lawyer Linda Kasonde remarked, “Grevazio Zulu is undoubtedly one of the best journalists that Zambia has ever had. He’s very understated yet cuts through to the crux of the matter. The past few years must have been mind-numbingly boring for him as all his interviews were with politicians and civil servants trying to advance a particular policy or government view point as opposed to real newsmakers. Last week’s Sunday Interview was very refreshing. The fact that someone like Pilato who is independent and opinionated was allowed on the show hopefully signals a return to what the Sunday Interview used to be about – good journalism. More of this please ZNBC! Well done Grevazio! Well done Pilato!”

President HH and his Govt are a bunch of naive and incompetent people- Sean Tembo

MWEETWA’S TRIBALISM

ABOUT DIVIDING THE COUNTRY

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. A few days ago, Southern Province Minister; Cornelious Mweetwa announced that he is not happy with the teacher recruitment process for Southern Province because he feels that it was infiltrated by people who come from outside the province. According to the Minister, only people who come from Southern Province need to apply for teaching jobs in the Province.

2. Most people might not understand or appreciate how divisive such a Government policy is, but we are tearing apart Zambia. One inch at a time. The full implications of this stupid Government policy might not be seen today or tomorrow, but it shall surely be seen soon.

3. President Hakainde Hichilema continuously sings about the motto of One Zambia One Nation, but his actions and those of his Government are very far from uniting this country. To the contrary, he is dividing this country at a faster pace than any of his 6 predecessors ever did. Indeed, with their current mindset, President Hakainde Hichilema and his New Dawn administration are a danger to the peace, unity and national security of this country.

4. To an ordinary resident of Southern Province, Cornelious Mweetwa’s statement means that there should not be a Government worker in the province who comes from another province. Obviously the common way that Southerners will be able to determine if particular civil servants in the province are from within the province or not, will be by looking at their surnames and also whether they can speak the local language.

5. It will only be a matter of time before Southerners start feeling that their job opportunities in the civil service in the province, have been taken away from them by people from other provinces. And who is to know how they will express their anger and frustration towards the teachers, medical personnel etcetera who do not come from within the province? These civil servants might be harassed, assaulted or even killed.

6. If, God forbid, civil servants coming from Northern or Eastern Province are harassed, assaulted or killed in Southern Province because of the inciting words that were issued by Minister Cornelious Mweetwa, what do you think would be the reaction by the people of Northern or Eastern Province towards civil servants that come from Southern Province who work in their area?

7. Before you realize it, such acrimony will spread beyond civil servants to just ordinary citizens who have settled in other parts of Zambia, away from their places of origin, and then it will spread to the metropolitan cities of Lusaka and Copperbelt, and then it will spread to our security and defense wings, and then we shall destroy our beautiful country while singing the One Zambia One Nation hymn, but not practicing it.

8. Suffice to mention that the UPND Government policy that only people coming from a particular province can be employed in that province, is unconstitutional and flies in the teeth of the constitutional declaration of Zambia as a unitary state. Even for countries with a federal government system like the United States, a citizen who is a resident of one state can freely travel to another state and get a Government job there. So why should Zambians from other provinces be prevented from getting a job in Southern Province?

9. By now, most reasonable Zambians have realized that President Hakainde Hichilema and his Government are a bunch of naive and incompetent people, as far as national governance is concerned. But it’s one thing for President Hichilema to be naive and incompetent in running the economy, and quite another thing for him and his Government to divide and inflame this country because of their naivety and incompetence.

10. President Hakainde Hichilema should immediately suspend his Government’s stupid policy of preventing Zambians from other provinces from applying for and getting a civil service job in Southern Province. If the President cannot see that this is a stupid policy, then perhaps it is not the policy that is stupid.

There is really no need to be in a rush to give away our minerals to foreign transnational mining corporations for next to nothing

There is really no need to be in a rush to give away our minerals to foreign transnational mining corporations for next to nothing.

Anglo American, Anglovaal, Glencore, Vendata and other mining corporations are interested in our minerals because there are gigantic profits to be made now and in the future.

The relationship between corporations and the government is not based on any special connections necessarily – although of course they would be happy if the government was under the control of puppet politicians who were in their pockets – their interest is in the profits. The prices of copper and cobalt are set to rise dramatically, and so are their profits. Here’s why:

It takes 180 pounds of copper to make a Tesla or other electric vehicle. This is five times the amount of copper needed to make a combustion engine motor vehicle. It takes 450 pounds of copper to build a normal house, once you include electric appliances, wiring and fixtures. If you put solar panels on it that will take another 100 to 150 pounds of copper wiring. A solar farm used to generate energy requires five times the copper it takes for an equivalent natural, coal, or nuclear power plant.

• If we are going to turn our cars into electric vehicles, we are going to need a lot more copper over the next ten years.
• If we are going to build houses for all the millennials – the largest generation on the planet – we are going to need a lot more copper.
• If renewables, such as wind and solar power, are used to build those things and supply energy then we are going to need a lot more copper.

This red metal is sometimes called Dr Copper because it has an uncanny ability to predict recessions and economic booms. The reason for this is that we unlikely to go into recession when we are in a building boom, whereas we are more likely to when we are not.

Industry, factories, homes, appliances and cars, all require copper, and that is never going to change because, if you look at the periodic table, you will see that there is no alternative to copper, except for silver. Silver conducts electricity better than copper but because it is so expensive it will never serve as a viable replacement. Plus, global copper reserves are estimated to be around 870,000,000 tonnes, whereas silver reserves are put at 530,000 tonnes.

Let us take this conversation further. Statistics show that 20 percent of the world’s population uses 50 percent of its copper; 13 percent of the population has no electricity; three out of four people on the planet – 75 percent – don’t have access to a car; so, if the 80 percent of the world that doesn’t currently use that much copper starts to do so as a result of increased energy needs – by buying appliances, electric cars, building houses and so on – then we will see a significant increase in the demand for copper. The price of copper, even though it has risen, will be so much higher when that demand increases.

And there is another factor. The EU has reacted to Russia’s war with the Ukraine by feverishly moving towards renewable energy, which, as we said above, requires five times the amount of copper as other energy sources. This will also spur the demand for electric vehicles. While recycling can meet up to 35 percent of current global copper consumption, we don’t have enough copper to recycle to satisfy increased renewable energy demands, plus, it takes a long time to bring copper mines online – around five to 10 years to market.

The upshot is that the demand for copper is going to increase significantly and so is its price. Under these circumstances, it doesn’t make sense to give tax breaks and other unnecessary incentives to transnational mining corporations. Why would we do that? We certainly would not be acting wisely. I can think of no reason why a government would do it, unless it was out of acting out of ignorance or corruption.

JUNE 30, MONTH OF BIG DECISIONS- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

JUNE 30, MONTH OF BIG DECISIONS

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

The month of June is a month of big decisions for the New Dawn Governmnet.

The indirect subsidy on fuel subsisting since last year is expected to come to an end this month-end.

Government has to decide whether to extend the tax waiver on petroleum products and conitune to lose revenue or abandon the initiative.

The IMF Deal also comes up for determination this month-end. The success or failure of this deal has immediate impact on the national budget and its performance.

Here are some details;

  1. FUEL PRICE- The Statutory Instrument No2 of 2022, ( Customs and Exercise (Suspension)( Fuel)Regulations 2022) that extended the suspension of collection of taxes of petroleum and diesel will expire on June 30th.

Government has to decide whether to extend the tax waiver or lift it.

Government loses upto $41.4million per month by foregoing the collection of these taxes.

Government also spends $26million on meeting price differential of the world market and exchange rate fluctuations.

To mitigate this loss, government introduced monthly price review.

Government also subsidises uniform pump pricing across the country.

  1. IMF Board to determine Zambia’s case- In December 2021,the IMF team reached a Staff-level Agreement with the Zambian authorities on a new arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) for 2022-2025 for $1.4billion.

The staff-level agreement is subject to IMF Management and Executive Board approval and receipt of the necessary financing assurances.

The IMF Executive Board is expected to determine Zambia’s case on 30th June 2022.

CHALLENGES

Reports of large scale corruption or imprudent use of public resources as demonstrated by the $50million fertiliser scandal, the ZESCO wooden poles deal, the opaque process in the fuel sector, all pause challenges to the securing of the IMF Deal.

Government has pledged to shift public spending away from inefficient public investment and poorly targeted subsidies, towards greater investment in health and education and the delivery of more social benefits.

To this effect, Government pledged to reform the FISP Programme by reducing expenditure from 2.8% GDP to 1%. It is yet to be measured what the adverse social-economic this decision will impact the Agriculture sector and rural communities.

Government also pledged to abandon all direct and indirect subsidies.

This was not done especially the petroleum sub-sector Government lost anticipated revenue by this action.

On subsidies on electricity, Government ZESCO has applied to the ERB to revise the charges and fees on new electricity connections.

ZESCO is yet to apply for revision of its tariffs.

CONCLUSION

Zambia had committed itself to an ambitious economic reform program, pledged to engage creditors of its foreign debt, committed to reforming debt management and pledged to promote debt transparency by strengthening and revising the Loans and Guarantees Act.

Government was also expected to reform public procurement rules and regulations central to ensuring value for money and the transparent use of public resources, improve the efficiency of public expenditures, and halt the accumulation of arrears.

It is yet to be seen how much has been achieved as the IMF Deal comes up for approval as for example, subsidies in the fuel sector were maintained during this period despite the pledge to drop them.

“People have written to me, both from the PF party and ofcourse ordinary Zambians. They have submitted their concerns and I have taken note. “Politics is about the people. Are the people happy? If people are not happy then they will complain to us. We have heard them, we took care of them but certainly we can not leave Politics to few selfish individuals” he added.

MPs who currently receive an average of K50, 000 want their monthly salaries to go up by 20%, want K3, 000 as sitting allowance and US$120,000 Car Loan

Members of Parliament will soon become some of the highest paid workers in Zambia if their demands for a 20% pay rise goes through.

As Parliament reopens tomorrow, the MPs who currently receive an average of K50, 000 want their monthly salaries to go up by 20%.

They also want their sitting allowances to increase to K3, 000 per sitting from the current K1, 500.

The People’s Representatives are also demanding that their Car Loans allocation be increased to US$120,000.

They also pushing for increases in other benefits such as Fuel allowances.

Some MPs interviewed defended their demands on account that the cost of living has gone up.

And sources at the National Assembly have confirmed that the MPs have called for a Caucus at which they hope to agree on the next course of action if their demands are not met.

The Caucus will take place at Parliament Building on Tuesday morning before Parliament opens later in the afternoon.

The sources revealed that during last sitting, Petauke Member of Parliament Emmanuel J. Banda was tasked with presenting the petition to Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane which was signed by all opposition and Independent MPs demanding for a higher pay.

“The MPs feel that petition was largely ignored and they believe it never received any attention from the President and now in this sitting, they want to put it as Agenda Item No. 1 and they will not relent until their demands are met,” said the source.

The source said the MPs are planning to conduct a silent protest in Parliament if they do not get their demands addressed.

“They plan to be keeping silent when in the House so that there is no debate whatsoever as a way of making the Executive respond to their demands. What is interesting is that the current Ministers of Finance and Home Affairs (Jack Mwiimbu) were in the forefront pushing for a salary increment in the last Parliament before the August 2021 elections, it would be interesting to see how they will conduct themselves on this matter this time around,” the source said.

HH should have taken time to learn- Harry Kalaba

HH should have taken time to learn, says Kalaba

By Thomas Ngala

THE only problem is mwayabula ba Chile balateya mu Lusaka Dynamos, you get them and say you will play in the national team, it doesn’t work that way, says Harry Kalaba as he insinuates that President Hakainde Hichilema needed to take time to learn.
Speaking on Radio Phoenix’s Let the people talk programme on Friday, Kalaba who is opposition Democratic Party president said the disadvantage of the President being at that level was that one had to be careful when advising him because “he will think you are undermining him”.

“The only problem is mwayabula ba Chile balateya mu (you get Chile who plays for) Lusaka Dynamos, you get them and say you will play in the national team. It doesn’t work that way. The President should have taken time to learn. The way [local government minister] Gary Nkombo has taken time to learn – how to become an MP, how to become now a minister,” he said. “So, more often, it’s what he knows. Even if it’s not right that will pass. I don’t see my brother, the Minister of Small Industries [Elias Mubanga] going to tell him ati (that) no I think apa nifi (here it is like this). Those lies they were telling us while in the opposition, because of lack of experience, because of lack of knowledge of what might happen when you are in government, they have now realised that they can’t sustain those lies. So, they have to look at Ukraine, they have to look at Russia. Why isn’t Botswana also crying Ukraine?”
And Kalaba said Zambians should admit that one of the fundamental mistakes they made was that they allowed President Hichilema to be making promises unreservedly.

“When people are lying you should tell them that one, what you are saying is not true. The problem we have in Zambia is that we love sugarcoating. First of all, we should admit that as Zambians that one of the fundamental mistakes we made was that we allowed President Hakainde Hichilema to be making promises unreservedly,” Kalaba noted.

“He said ine nganaisa (when I come at) 10:00 hours, fuel… he was even writing on the board…Y–C, Y =…fyonse ifyo (all that), you remember that formula? It has not worked. There is a situation where the President was telling us that. He was being interviewed by Luchi here on Phoenix where he said ‘Lunchi, I have not wanted to say this but I will say it. When I become President, my ministers will not drive GXs’. Go and see the vehicle which [information minister] Chushi Kasanda is driving. It’s a GX.”

I’m not being paid to promote gay rights in Zambia-Laura Miti

Outspoken civil society activist Laura Miti has denied allegations that she is being paid to promote gay rights in Zambia.

Despite denying the allegations, Ms. Miti has said Zambia should decriminalize gay sex in Zambia.

Featuring on ZNBC Television’s Sunday Interview, Ms. Miti said she cannot receive money to champion the agenda she does not believe in.

Ms. Miti, however, said Zambia should stop jailing people over gay sex.

“I am not pushing for gay rights. Let me speak about this, you know to have gay rights you have to put them in the constitution. I don’t think we should. I don’t think we are ready. I don’t think you push a country to put in their constitution what generally they are not ready for because that constitution becomes academic. And if you look at western countries, it took them hundreds of years to get to the point when they could put gay rights in the constitution so I don’t think Zambia and Africa to a large extent is ready for that,” Ms. Miti said.

“My point is, we must not put people in jail. That is the only point. Let’s make small movements and the small movements for me are that you cannot break down hotel rooms. Just think of all the people we have gotten in prison. They had private relationships. It is them two consenting adults doing whatever they do. Gay rights currently illegal just like apartheid was legal. You see what I mean, apartheid was legal, and does that make it just? So all I ask for is that they should not be put in jail. That is the only thing. We should change the law and not make this criminal. Let’s decriminalize it,” Ms. Miti said.

The activist insisted that she does not pursue wealth in her life.

“My response to being paid to push an agenda is that anybody who says you have been paid to say something usually has a price themselves and it is very sad. I just think to myself if you think I have been paid it means you could be paid. You know what I mean; you could be paid to say something you don’t believe in. I could never be paid to say something I don’t believe. You know if I was being paid I would marvelously be rich. Luckily for me I don’t pursue wealth, I don’t pursue wealth. I don’t wanna be rich but even if I wanted to be rich I don’t just have the kind of money so I genuinely believe that we should not have people sitting in jail. That is my only issue. We should not have people sitting in jail, arrested over having sex,” she said.

Ms. Miti said Zambia should direct its energy to fighting rampant non consensual sex.

“Let me tell you what I think we should be dealing with which really breaks my heart. You know right now the sex problem we have in the country is non consensual sex. In this country, young girls and even girls of the age of consent routinely have sex they do not want because they are looking for a job, because they are trying to enter police, because they are trying to get any of these hierarchical institutions. You have young girls 10, 11, 12… of living in homes which are probably of not their parents. Raped by their parents, raped by their uncles. Issues being resolved at home. Do you know why? Because as a country we believe that heterosexual sex, we seem to understand man. We have so many broken people over non consensual sex. Last week, someone came into my inbox and she named a human resource manager of a huge private company in Zambia who has pushed her to have sex with him unless. Otherwise she won’t get the job. What I am saying is that as a country we are very myopic. These issues that are affecting us like extreme poverty, we are not discussing them,” she said.

On the same TV Show, Ms. Miti called for the quick enactment of the Access to Information Law in Zambia.

She further said the proposed amendment of the Public Order Act should be tabled in the next session of Parliament

Abolish Fixed Banking Charges And Rethink The Definition Of A Dormant Account

ABOLISH FIXED BANKING CHARGES AND RETHINK THE DEFINITION OF A DORMANT ACCOUNT

Those days when the banking sector was dominated by foreign nationals as MDs, the complaint was mainly that these foreigners don’t understand or have no interest about Zambians. Today, all the top performing banks are managed by Zambians, respected bankers. Take the two reds, the blue and green banks for example together they account for more than fifty percent of total revenue generated in the sector and they all headed by Zambians. I hold accounts with two of them so I m speaking from experience. This is not a complaint it’s an observation.

On charges for example, I see a monthly bank charge read MONTHLY MANAGEMENT FEE K110, K150. On the other I see a MONTHLY MAINTENANCE FEE K195. Now imagine I have banked with one bank from 1997 that is 25 years and I always pay K110 for merely holding an account. Another one same K195 monthly for merely holding an account with them. The point I am stressing is that if I left K10,000 in my bank account in January by December I will find about K1,350 gone, deducted. My appeal is that yes during the 1990s when there was no online banking, inter branch was the order of the day, batching of transactions with calculators with slips, clearing of cheques was manual were banks used to exchange physical cheques, the fixed charge could be justified. But today, technology has evolved, most tasks are now done by clients not banks. My appeal therefore to the leading top banks is lead the way abolish these monthly fixed charges across all accounts. Banks should only charge based on activities. If I draw cash, I send an ewallet, I do a ddacc, a swift transaction yes I must pay but charging for merely having an account with a bank is outdated banking, it’s arm chair banking ( nawikalafye impiya shileingila). The two red banks, the green and blue can influence this, if they abolished fixed bank charges across all accounts, the rest will follow. There is no justification today to maintain a monthly management or account maintenance fee as I have pointed out technology has changed and Zambian MDs please go to your boards at end of this Q2 and seek to abolish these “punishable fees” that have no basis. We are now the ones in charge of these banks not foreigners so let us spearhead changes that benefit Zambians in the banking sector. Farmers, marketeers, SMEs all want to keep money in banks, but these fixed monthly fees drives them away. You are free as Banks to charge any activity based charges.

My second appeal is that Banks must rethink a definition of a dormant account. For example, if I have two accounts with a Bank say two Kwacha accounts or one Kwacha and one USD. Then I am just using one of them the other one I have just kept some savings there for a rain day. How can a bank declare my savings account that is not active dormant and take it to unclaimed balances when the other account is very active? I have experienced this with one Bank in the last one month and one of my friends had one of his account closed based on the same reasoning. Yes I agree if a person has only one account and it’s dormant for say six months I have no issue if that account is declared dormant based on BoZ regulations. But where a client has multiple accounts and say one is very active and the other is not but well funded a bank wakes up and declares a well funded account dormant and closes it then there is a problem. So Banks please rethink on this one, your systems should look at the client overall not individual accounts. It’s simple with latest technology it can be done. Again you big Banks managed by Zambians lead the way on this score. My experience on this one was with one of the top three Banks not a small Bank and I was shocked when I got a call from my personal banker telling me that one of your accounts will be declared dormant, make a transaction on it. I said why, coz I am very active on the other two accounts, how can you declare a savings account dormant when it’s well funded?. Ati no it’s the system. OMG it was very embarrassing to say the least. Who runs the system? Who programs the system to do this? It’s us human beings. Let us reprogram these banking systems to stop doing these unreasonable acts. Zikomo

Man who stole Ramaphosa’s money at his farm. See his life style & the type of cars he is driving

When President Cyril Ramaphosa’s farm was raided, the alleged thief is believed to have acquired flashy automobiles and luxurious homes with the stolen money. In Limpopo, a maid at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game property told Imanuwela David, a Namibian citizen with dual South African citizenship, that the money was there. On the Syferkuil settlement, his associates are reported to have helped him steal

David is believed to have visited the property on a regular basis and was familiar with its layout. The crime was committed on February 9th, 2020, and it appeared to be a simple one. After then, the robbers are said to have split the money, and David escaped to Cape Town. Cyril Ramaphosa has been charged with money laundering by Arthur Fraser, the former head of the State Security Agency and a close ally of former president Jacob Zuma. He made the same remarks about Major General Wally Rhoode, the chief of the Presidential Protection Unit.

Ramaphosa’s opponents were already smelling blood before the party’s national elective conference in December thanks to Fraser’s social media post regarding the charge. If the president’s property is full of foreign funds, opposition parties have called for a comprehensive probe. According to the president’s statement, the money was taken from the sales of games this week. Foreign hunters tell City Press they organize their excursions and pay to bring the animals they kill home with cash, according to sources.

The claim in Fraser’s affidavit is supported by information from a source who has talked to David since the burglary. The source says that when about $4 million (R62 million) was stolen from the game farm, it was “concealed in the furniture,” which is said to be a couch.

ESCAPE TO NAMIBIA

City Press found out that David crossed the Orange River by canoe on June 12, 2020, four months after the alleged burglary, to get away from Ramaphosa’s investigators who were following him in South Africa. He then went to Namibia, but was soon caught at an upscale complex in Windhoek. The police in Namibia said that David was a wanted fugitive in South Africa because he stole 65 million Namibian dollars, which is the same as the $4 million that Ramaphosa said David stole from him.

In July of that year, another Namibian report said that David snuck out of South Africa with R7 million. Someone who knew David said that he was arrested for illegally entering Namibia when the country was on “hard lockdown” during the pandemic. There were also rumors that he bribed the police officer who went with him in the canoe and another top Namibian official who picked him up at the meeting place on the riverbanks and drove him to Windhoek.See the source image

LIVING LARGE IN CAPE TOWN

It was said that the investigators who were following David were from the crime intelligence division of the SA Police Service. They are said to have “kidnapped” the housekeeper who told the police about the burglars and “tortured” her until she told them that David and his friends were hiding in Cape Town. David’s old girlfriend in Cape Town, whose phone number was on his list of contacts, said on Friday that they broke up a long time ago and that she didn’t know where he was.

A person who knows about the criminal world in Cape Town said that David was trading Ramaphosa dollars on the black market for less than the exchange rate as early as this year. Over the years, he has lived well, driving expensive German cars like the Mercedes-BenzC-Class C63 convertible, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Range Rover, and other cars. He was also a regular in the upscale Camps Bay neighborhood.

Another source said that the suspects were also big fans of Rolex watches, but that the items were taken away by the crime intelligence agents who were looking into the missing dollars. Officials with knowledge of the situation said that once David realized the police were after him, he used his money to get close to Cape Town’s most powerful crime bosses. Some of them are well-known names in the criminal world. The officials said that he hasn’t been caught yet because the Western Cape police are close with the criminal world.See the source image

Yesterday, the presidency released a second statement about the issue. In it, they said that Ramaphosa knows there is a lot of public interest and concern about the claims made in a criminal complaint against him, but he is still very focused on rebuilding the economy and the country. The president says again that he didn’t do anything wrong and promises to help any police investigation in any way he can. He says that his homes are safer now than they were after what happened in February 2020.

Due to a possible investigation, the presidency said it would not be able to talk about the details of the situation any further and asked that the legal process be allowed to take its course. In the statement, it said, “The president reaffirms his commitment to fighting corruption and making law enforcement agencies more professional so they can better serve the public and meet their needs.”

Lady tracks boyfriend with AirTag and kills him after finding him in a bar with another woman

A woman allegedly tracked down her boyfriend at a bar with an Apple AirTag and killed him by ramming him over three times with her car after she saw him with another woman.

Apple AirTags are coin-sized devices that can be attached to keys, backpacks, purses and other items to help people track them down via iPhone if they’re misplaced.

According to the Indianapolis Star, Gaylyn Morris, 26, allegedly hit her boyfriend Andre Smith (pictured above), also 26, with her vehicle around 12:30 a.m. on June 3 in the parking lot of an Indianapolis pub called Tilly’s in Indiana, US.

Lady tracks boyfriend with AirTag and kills him after finding him in a bar with another woman

‘Officers arrived and located Mr. Smith laying on the ground underneath a vehicle,’ Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release.

‘It appeared he was struck by the vehicle. Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) Engine Company 6 responded and unfortunately pronounced the Mr. Smith deceased at the scene.’

A witness said Morris had told her about how she tracked down Smith with an AirTag, according to a probable cause affidavit for Morris’ arrest.

She also said she was in a relationship with the victim and thought he was cheating on her with another woman, the Indianapolis Star reported.

After arriving at Tilly’s bar, Morris allegedly grabbed an empty wine bottle and swung it. The bottle did not hit the other woman because Smith caught it but later three of them were asked to leave by staff.

The report says witnesses later saw Morris pulling forward and clipping Smith with her car in the parking lot.

‘And he went down, at which time… [Morris] then backed over him and then pulled forward and hit him for the third time,’ the probable cause affidavit states.

As of Sunday night, June 5 Morris is being held behind bars in the Marion County Jail and was preliminarily charged with murder, according to online jail records.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will assess the charges and whether any additional ones are to be filed, local authorities said.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Tuesday, according to Law and Crime.

In Zambia, Even The Poorest Families Find Time And Money To Coordinate A Funeral Of A Relative But Not Money To Form A Family Business- Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

IN ZAMBIA, EVEN THE POOREST FAMILIES FIND TIME AND MONEY TO COORDINATE A FUNERAL OF A RELATIVE BUT NOT MONEY TO FORM A FAMILY BUSINESS

By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

Everyday we speak about Zambia participation in the economy. But have we ever had a chance to study why it’s very difficult for Zambians to graduate from selling tomatoes on the streets to owning a tomato processing plant?

In order for Zambia to develop, we need to harness and support Zambian businesses. When I say Zambian businesses I don’t necessarily mean black Zambians. I mean all Zambians of all races, gender, black, white, ebony or green.

It’s very important for a nation to harness Zambian entrepreneurs because these people make money in Zambia, bank money in Zambia and retire in Zambia. They produce the most stable GDP because their profits remain in Zambia!

When you look at Kenya, Tanzania and even Nigeria, you will find that the locals are huge business people groomed and supported by governments. In Nigeria, there was even a government program of creating billionaires! In Zambia that must be a taboo!

The first stop we need to make is to ensure that small businesses that are younger than 5 years pay only 6% tax! A lot of exemptions should also be made in terms of fees paid to both central and local government.

Government should also get its act together and collect only one tax from businesses. Then they should go and share between Napsa, NHIMA, ZRA, Skills level, local authorities and many other people that collect such fees from companies. Compliance in itself in Zambia is very expensive! I would like to commend ZRA for the efficiency in tax collections in the recent years but honestly a company cannot be speaking to 10 different agencies for licences when all these agencies represent one central government! Let one authority collect one fee and give businesses a break!

In Zambia, we frustrate businesses and discourage them from growing because we don’t care about the struggles of the business person but we are just interested in choking them with both administrative and economic barriers of doing business.

Mindset is also very important. Colleagues why are we so jealous of successful people aii? Our Zambian mindset is such that we like investigating wealth but not poverty. When you go to Kenya, they celebrate their own millionaires. When you go to Nigeria, they love Dangote. Today we have big Nigerian banks operating in Africa but look how we stressed Matani here in Zambia? The man had to run away from finance bank instead of government giving him loans to open up branches world wide!!!!

We also need to learn to work in partnerships. Maybe we need to change our education system because in Zambia we have very unhealthy competition! From primary school, kids are made to pass number 1,2,3…50! Imagine how bad kids feel when they pass number 41 and the friend is number one. You develop hatred for high flyers just in kids. By the time that child is 30 years, anything that looks like hard work and success will have to be pulled down!!! Remember there can only be one number 1 in a class so them group three pupils are in the majority. In classes we even group pupils as group 1, group 2 and group 3! Because of this phenomenon, Zambians can’t work in business partnerships coz we hate each other, too jealous and when your partner is doing great all you want is to bring their name into the mud! The only advantage is that God has other plans for man!

So we need to have a meeting as a nation and decide what we want to achieve! You can’t have a nation of high tempers on political matters and no interest when it comes to business. But when your friends succeed in business you want to come and bring it down, make it difficult to do business and many other spanners!

When you go to Kenya, helicopters are flown by every Jim and jack. Here in Zambia mmmm don’t even try! The guy who bought a Bugatti was investigated! So how can you now create role models? People would rather hide their wealth or not make any wealth at all because society judges rich people harshly!

Colleagues to be poor in some way is a sign of laziness. Don’t even hate on me for this statement! When a person really wants money, they can get it. Look at the boys pushing wheelbarrows in town! That’s an initiative. So society should harness those guys and graduate them to riding tricycles and carry goods around town! That’s how helpful societies operate! For some people though, they want to work, they have ideas but no capital and help! They are not lazy! They really want to work! Those people we should help as a society from taxes collected from those with surplus!

We should not be spending time on Facebook waiting to pull down the next successful guy! Let’s work bane, change the mindset, make lives east for ourselves! A state is an agreement between people! How we want to live that how we should create it. So how about discussing real issues to improve ourselves?

We can’t continue like this. When are we going to get rich?

A country is only good when it can solve its own problems!

The struggle continues…

IT’S A WIN-WIN WITH CHINA…China can never declare us bankrupt – Dr Fred M’membe

IT’S A WIN-WIN WITH CHINA
…China can never declare us bankrupt – Dr Fred M’membe

By Kombe Mataka/ The Mast

IF WE were only in debt with China, we would go to sleep without worry, says Socialist Party president Fred M’membe.

Dr M’membe said when he appeared on activist News Network Programme that it was debt from the Western allies that was posing a threat to the country because Zambia had a more beneficial relationship with China than what he termed as “imperialists”.

“If we were only indebted to China we would go to sleep without worry. The pressure that is there is the Euro bond we owe it is the debt that we have with the Westerners. China can never declare us bankrupt. The threat is from the Western institutions we owe,” he said.

“They (West) want to put all the burden on China and put more conditionalities of lending more money on what we do with China. Trying to blackmail China into changing its debt condition agreements with us and in many respects. China has cooperated to ensure the burden on us is lessened. China is not an imperial country. China has never threatened our sovereignty.”

Dr M’membe claimed that Western allies were manipulating countries in which they had an interest.

“It is them who have robbed us for centuries. They have dehumanised us. Today they want to pose as liberators? We are not fools. They want to create a fear among us of China but we have a win-win relationship with China. Yes, there is also bad behaviour among some foreign Chinese capitalist but that is not the state policy of China. The US itself is a beneficiary from Chinese progress. They are doing business with China. They have borrowed money from China and they want us to fear China! It won’t happen. We are not fools,” he said.

“China is trying to advance its economic interests, it is trying to build an economy. We have a more beneficial relationship with China than we had with these imperialists. Yes, we owe China, but doesn’t the US owe China? The US owes China more money than any other country in the world. The US is more indebted to China than any other country in the world. Is China going to colonise the US? No!”

On the Ukraine war, Dr M’membe said Russia’s reaction was legitimate.

“It is not a conflict Russia went into willingly, but it was a last resort. We don’t want wars. We wish that conflict could have been resolved peacefully. We still even wish up to now that war stops tomorrow and the issue resolved peacefully. We don’t want a world of wars. But here is a country that has got more [military] bases beyond its borders than any other country in the world. They have bases littered all over the world than any other country. Who is threatening them? Russia is not much more of a threat than US is a threat to Russia. Russia doesn’t have bases all over. It does not have bases all over. It does not have troops stationed in so many countries. There are no foreign troops stationed near USA or bases near the USA. None. Yes, we respect the right of the USA to defend itself but also they should respect the rights of others to defend themselves. The concerns about the security of the USA are the concerns about the security in every country, big or small,” he said.

“Let the US secure itself but it also must allow others to secure themselves. We are saying the war in Ukraine has been caused by the USA and NATO and they are responsible for that. They left Russia with no options. NATO today cannot hide its intentions. NATO and the US are the same. NATO was started by the US in 1949 as a way to try and use Europe to advance America’s interests. They have succeeded in that. We have seen NATO now being used in other countries. In Afghanistan, NATO went into Libya, beyond its original intentions. NATO is involving itself in wars that have nothing to do with threat on Europe.”

Dr M’membe accused the US of causing instability.

“NATO members are setting up bases all over the world including Africa. Today we have the issue of AFRICOM. The can reach any country in Africa within five minutes. They have the biggest drone base in West Africa. They are trying to militarise everything and weaponise everything. International relations today are being weaponised,” he noted.

Dr M’membe said another cold war was imminent.

“We have lived under a Cold War before. We lived in a bipolar world. We thought it was bad. Today, we are living in a unipolar world. It is worse. Yes, they have set up an office here (Zambia). We can cooperate with the US in many things. No country can tackle its own problems by itself, not even the USA itself. But not in this way. We know where the US has had bases or military presence there have been problems,” he said.

Dr M’membe said the US had interests in Zambia’s strategic mineral reserves.

“Zambia and DRC hold 70 per cent of the world’s cobalt reserves. We have copper which is one of the strategic minerals for future technologies especially electric cars. They understand why they want their troops here,” said Dr M’membe.

K9.3 billion released for 2022 Budget Implementation, all arrears to contractors cleared

The Ministry of Finance in May released K9.3 billion towards the ongoing implementation of the 2022 National Budget.

Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane said that 9.2 billion of the total release was domestically financed while 76 million Kwacha was foreign.

Dr Musokotwane said that of the released funds 646.5 million Kwacha was channelled towards the countrywide supply of drugs and medical supplies to avoid interruptions while public hospitals and universities got 29.2 million Kwacha for operational expenses.

He says women and youth empowerment programmes under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) were given K 2.8m.
The Minister states that primary and secondary schools are funded on a quarterly basis hence grants for the second quarter were disbursed in April to facilitate the smooth implementation of the free education policy in the second term.

Dr Musokotwane further reveals that Food Security Packs and the Social Cash Transfer Programme got K1.50m and K169.3m. Other sectors that have benefited are road funds with 741.4 million Kwacha which involves payments to over 700 micro, small and medium scale contractors and suppliers of services in the road sector.

In a statement to the media in Lusaka, Dr Musokotwane said this has cleared all arrears to contractors.
The Minister also noted that K368.8m was released to dismantle liabilities for goods and services previously supplied to the Government, of which 1-hundred million Kwacha went towards payment of personnel-related arrears for public service officials, some of whom were owed for more than 5 years.

And Dr Musokotwane said K2.4bn was released for debt service of which K433m went to external debt service for multilateral creditors while Salaries for civil servants and overseas allowances for employees in missions abroad got K3.91bn.

Meanwhile, Dr Musokotwane has expressed delight that consultations for the 2023 National Budget and the 2023-2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework are progressing well.

He said the positive feedback from stakeholders and the public to the Ministry’s invitation to participate in the formulation of next year’s national budget and the MTEF for 2023 to 2025, is encouraging and demonstrates the resolve by Zambians to help shape the direction of economic policy and the national development process.

So far the Ministry of Finance and National Planning has held participatory consultations in Luapula and Northern Provinces with nine other meetings set from June 6 to 22 in seven provinces.

Putin threatens to strike ‘new targets’ if US continues supplying long range missiles to Ukraine

0

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has threatened to strike ‘new targets’ if the US supplied long-range missiles to Ukraine, according to Russian state media.

According to Putin, delivering new arms to Kyiv only aims to “drag out the armed conflict for as long as possible,” Putin said in an interview to Rossiya-1 TV channel, Russian state media TASS reported on Sunday, June 5.

He said when it comes to Western deliveries of long-range missiles to Kyiv, Russia will draw “appropriate conclusions” and strike those “facilities” that it has not yet targeted, he said.

“If they are supplied, we will draw appropriate conclusions from this and use our own weapons, of which we have enough, in order to strike at those facilities we are not targeting yet,” Putin said, commenting on the situation regarding the supply of American multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) to Ukraine.

His comments come after US president Joe Biden on Tuesday, May 31, announced he will be sending new advanced missile systems to Ukraine which could alter the tide of the war to Ukraine’s favour.

Putin blamed the United States for “injecting large sums of money” into its economy as a means of combating the consequences of the pandemic, which led to inflation and an “unfavorable situation in the food market, because first of all, food prices went up.”

Putin also blamed “the short-sighted policy of European countries, and above all the European Commission, in the energy sector” as another reason for the crisis in food and energy market.

“Among other things, the Europeans did not listen to our urgent requests to preserve long-term contracts for the supply of the same natural gas to European countries, and they also began to (terminate the contracts) … This had a negative impact on the European energy market: Prices crept up. Russia has absolutely nothing to do with it,” he said.

As soon as gas prices went up, fertilizer prices “immediately increased, because some of these fertilizers are produced, including at the expense of gas. Everything is interconnected,” Putin added.

“But we warned about this, and this has nothing to do with any military operation of Russia,” Putin said.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT: Abolish Ministry Of Information And Media- Kellys Kaunda

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT

SUBJECT: ABOLISH MINISTRY OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA

To describe and justify its functions and existence, the Zambian government says, “As a focal point for national information gathering and dissemination, MIBS has a major responsibility to co-ordinate and facilitate the operations of the media …”

For starters, no single ministry must be designated with the responsibility to gather information generated in every other ministry and government department. Each ministry can and does generate and disseminate information to identified audiences. This is the reason why each of them has a public relations officer with the same responsibility.

My suggestion is that disband the Ministry Information and Media and distribute the officers therein to the PR offices of other ministries. The current staff levels of normally one officer in the PR office does not reflect the importance of communication in an information age. Each ministry must be staffed with officers whose skill sets should reflect modern communication strategies that range from traditional to social media and other media arts.

Instead, the office of the Secretary to Cabinet must host the office of the Chief Government Spokesperson at the level of Permanent Secretary. Under this officer should be a staff compliment with communication and policy analytical skills that can study communication trends in the country and beyond and identify communication opportunities.

Working closely with the media team at State House and Public Relations Officers in various ministries and quasi-government bodies, the Chief Government Spokesperson can strategize effective ways of gathering and disseminating government information. Under this office shall fall the Zambia National Information Services, ZANIS, which is the technical and PR wing of government.

It is not the duty of the office of the proposed Chief Government Spokesperson to speak on policy issues that can be handled ably by line ministries. Instead, this officer will be communicating cabinet decisions and clarifying overall government policy. Alternatively, this officer could facilitate the engagement of the Secretary to Cabinet directly with the media from time to time. Otherwise, his or her task will be that of the face and voice of the Zambian government.

Under the office of the Chief Government Spokesperson should be several units that together define communication and media arts. For instance, there should be a department that deals with traditional media; social media; literary works such as books, book writers, publishing houses, along with film production, artforms such as sculpture, painting; and libraries, etc. Each of these media arts are potential forms of communicating any kind of information and message that government may desire.

Through film for instance, the government of Turkey has promoted anti-terrorism messages; through film, the government of South Africa has shared the various strategies that were employed in the struggle for freedom. Through sculpture, several countries in Europe have told the various aspects of their countries’ history. There is so much that communication is and what it can do to promote the Zambian identity and unity.

In case someone is worried about the media without a government Ministry: yes, only then shall the media achieve a self-regulatory framework. For the public broadcaster, ZNBC, the BBC model and how its board of governors is selected is a very good model to borrow. Don’t worry about the Independent Broadcasting Authority, IBA. There are sufficient examples around the globe to secure its independence and professional conduct.

Mr. President, you were elected on the promise of a new governance environment. The media space is one area you must not leave untouched. Disband the Ministry of Information and Media and end the temptation to interfere with media operations and their independence.

Kenya suspends trading license of popular bar over reports that Blacks are not allowed to mix with Whites

0

The Governor of Nairobi County has suspended the trading license of a popular bar pending an investigation after a viral video on social media appeared to show a Black patron being ordered to leave a queue with White and Asian customers.

Besides the racial discrimination claims against Black customers, Governor Ann Kananu also suspended the license of the Alchemist Bar because of noise pollution complaints, The Star reported.

“I have directed county executive committee member for environment to institute a multiagency task force and a comprehensive report of the same to be made in the next five days,” said Kananu.

The high-end Westlands-based club is no longer open for business. The video of the incident in question was shared by a patron who alleged White and Indian customers had been made to join a queue that was separate from Blacks. The video also appears to show a Black customer being made to leave that queue.

“We must protect our county which exercises immense respect to all social races and strongly stands against any form of discrimination and noisy pollution,” Nairobi City County Executive for Environment Larry Wambua said.

But despite the outrage after the video went viral, the club denied the racial discrimination allegations, BBC reported. The club also released a statement on Tuesday saying it had agreed to shut down to allow for an investigation into the May 20 incident. Management said it would look into whether the Black man in the video was denied entry and if customers having separate lines was club policy.

The club added that it would also ascertain if customers have experienced discrimination at the facility by taking a look at past events and analyzing interviews.

“After careful consultations with Nairobi County Government, the Alchemist has agreed to close its doors while a thorough investigation is conducted over the next few days,” the club said, per The Star.

The Alchemist Bar also rendered an apology on Monday and said it had contacted the persons who shared the video to get more details on what transpired. “To anyone that has felt aggrieved, we sincerely apologise and we look forward to sitting down together and addressing these issues head-on,” the club said.

How will we ever beat racism if we are racist against our own selves. Last week when I went to Alchemist there was a line for white and Indian people separate from the blacks’. One black guy tried using the line akachujwa immediately. This is sad really

It is better to have a corrupt and incompetent judiciary than one that is not independent

By Joseph Chirwa

Introduction

The events surrounding the judiciary since the set of the ‘New Dawn’ deserve a comment.

This is even when I know that my comments may not sit too well with the powers that be. However, I am comforted by the words of Desmond Tutu who warned that “if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” Thus, I will comment and state that “chondifika chindifike.”

Purge of judges

Since the set of the ‘New Dawn’ there have been administrative structural changes within the judiciary. One of the monumental moments was the appointment of a new Chief Justice. There was bipartisanship in support of the appointment of Justice Mumba Malila, SC as Chief Justice to fill the vacant position left by the late Ireen Mambilima. This is a score on the part of President Hakainde Hichilema for appointing a profound professional to replace another iconic figure. We supported and applaud the President for this. However, what followed is what many call the ‘purge’ of judges. In as much I do not subscribe to such thinking but the pronouncements from UPND cadres raise worry. To suggest that the judiciary was pro-PF and hence it must be disbanded is worrying. To accuse an independent judiciary and its judges of being partisan is shocking and undermines the rule of law and good governance. There is not even a shred of evidence to support the call for reforms that include disbanding specific courts because they may have ruled against the UPND whilst in opposition. To suggest that all judges appointed during the tenure of the PF and by president Edgar Lungu exercising his constitutional right to do so undermines the independence of the judiciary and is actually contemptuous. The UNPD government must rein in on its cadres and stop them from throwing malicious venoms on the judges as these are acts that undermine the rule of law. Judges must be judged by their conduct through set out mechanisms such as the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC) and not at the altar of politics. I end here by quoting the great American Hugo Black who stated that “the layman’s constitutional view is that what he likes is constitutional and that which he doesn’t like is unconstitutional.”

Transfer of magistrates

The transfer of magistrates is in itself a normal administrative routine. Magistrates have been transferred by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) since its creation. However, two significant events lead to many of us question the timing of the mass transfers. The first followed a protest by UPND cadres at court grounds against magistrates performing their functions. To them, the failure by the state to secure convictions of people accused of corruption was the fault of magistrates. In the small minds of these cadres acting on impulse and fueled by mob psychology, the accused persons are guilty and they expect nothing more than a guilty verdict. In essence, the party and its government is asking the courts to play politics. The party and its government is asking the courts to discard the presumption of innocence and summarily convict the accused persons without due process so that it feeds public opinion that it is fighting corruption. The fight against corruption must be supported by all. However, it must not be used to settle political scores.

The second event of worry was a statement by the JSC that the transfers were a coincidence and had nothing to do with dealing with magistrates handling high profile corruption cases. This statement is alarming and dangerous. Its half-wittedness and the amateurish way it was made raises more questions than answers. It was better to keep quiet. That coincidence could have been avoided because the reckless transfers have far-reaching unintended consequences of the judiciary and the justice system. Many cases will have to be restarted. Many accused persons will spend more time in remand. It is a total disaster. In the interest of the rule of law and the respect for constitutionalism and key institutions like the judiciary the transfers must be reversed and a more intelligent way must be employed to effect those changes. The great American John F Kennedy, whose life was cut short by the brutality of a trigger and bullet once warned, “the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.”

Politicisation of the judiciary or judicialisation of politics?

The independence of the judiciary is guaranteed under the Constitution of Zambia. The supreme law of the land requires that the judiciary as an institution must have both financial and functional independence (Articles 122 and 123). This also extends to judges as a collective and judges as individuals. Thus, the judiciary as an institution, judges as a collective and judges as individuals must not be subject to the control of any person or body. This includes the President of the Republic of Zambia. This includes all institutions such as the JCC and JSC. To bring politics to the courts of law is alarming, unfortunate and dangerous. Caroline Kennedy wisely guided that “the bedrock of our democracy is the rule of law and that means that we have an independent judiciary, judges who can make decisions independent of the political winds that are blowing.”

This means that we allow magistrates and judges to apply the law as it is and not to satisfy the political agenda of a ruling political party. It is not the duty of the judges and magistrates to convict. Their job is to dispense justice regardless of the political winds and that is based on which party, being prosecution and defence, has a compelling case. The prosecution having a daunting task of presenting their case to the high threshold of “beyond reasonable doubt”. If that has not been met the judges and magistrates must acquit and acquit unapologetically. I end with the wise counsel of Nan Aaron who cautioned that “an independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our democracy” adding that “it is so vital to be used as a means of placating a political party’s base.”

Better to have a corrupt and incompetent judiciary.

It has always been the fundamental ethos of this jurisdiction that a corrupt judiciary is preferred to one that is not independent. We also believe that an incompetent judiciary is better than one that is not independent. In the case of Godfrey Miyanda v Matthew Chaila (judge of the High Court) (1985) it was held that “the public have a right to have the independence of the judiciary preserved; the absolute freedom and independence of judges is imperative and necessary for the better administration of justice.”

In his judgement, Ernest Linesi Sakala who later assumed the chair of Chief Justice opined that “it is better to take the chance of judicial incompetence, irritability, or irrelevance, than to run the risk of getting a Bench warped by apprehension of the consequences of judgments which ought to be given without fear or favour.”

Thus, all political players must allow the courts to operate independently. Both the party in government and the opposition must allow the courts to be independent as the independence of the judiciary is the only oxygen to our democracy. It is for this reason, at this defining hour and with so much promise that the UPND as a party in government must not repeat the mistakes of its predecessor parties. We must take heed to what the Burman dissident Aung San Suu Kyi said that “the judiciary must be strengthened and released from political interference.” This is so, as Andrew Jackson foretold, “all the rights secured under the Constitution are worth nothing, and a mere bubble, except guaranteed to them by an independent and virtuous judiciary.”

LUSAKA COP TURNS DOWN K12,000 BRIBE

LUSAKA COP TURNS DOWN K12,000 BRIBE

An alert Lusaka based Police officer of Zambia Police Service Headquarters has turned down a K12,000 bribe to cover up a theft of solar panels and a submersible pump.

The Cop identified as Inspector Bornwell Hatontola on Tuesday, 24th May 2022 at around 08:36 hours, received a phone call from a Mr. Honest Mweemba asking if his Motor Vehicle was available for hire on that particular day.

Mr Mweemba asked the Cop, who also does a side ‘hustle’ as a driver, to ferry some items from Mumbwa to Lusaka’s Makeni area.

Around 19:00hrs, inspector Hatontola started off from Lusaka to Mumbwa District and met the alleged suspect who pulled two small black bags from the right side of the road in the bush and put them in Hatontola’s Toyota Regius vehicle.

“He also pulled a 25 kgs white sack which contained a big submersible pump, a black roll of cable which he suspected was a power cable for the submersible pump and a roll of Nylon rope,” the Cop narrated.

Hatontola was then asked to drive about 1.5 Kms in the west direction and was ordered to make a right turn in the bush to pack the solar panels from where they were hidden.

It was at this point that Hatontola sensed something fishy and refused to drive the vehicle in the bush around that time on account that it was not only highly risky but late.

It was at this point that out of desperation, the alleged suspect offered to give the Cop a K12,000 after being queried on where he got the items, to which he responded that he got them on some farm on the south side of the road and that there was nothing to worry about because some farm workers knew what was going on.

Upon realising that he could be dealing with an active theft case, Inspector Hatontola then drove for a few kilometres, parked the car by the road side and immediately called a Chisamba based Police Officer, constable Jimmy Sikazwe and further told him to quickly alert Kapyanga Police check point or Nangoma police post to intercept the motor vehicle which he was driving because he highly suspected that the solar panels he was about to deliver to Lusaka were stolen goods.

Shortly after speaking to constable Sikazwe, Inspector Hatontola then called sergeant Silwenga of Nangoma Police Post, made a similar request and gave him the number plate of the car he was driving.

After the alert and the alleged stolen goods were packed in his vehicle, Hatontola then sarted off driving back to Lusaka and reached Nangoma area at exactly 22:49 Hours only to be stopped by a car which blocked his lane.

Three male police officers, one of them armed with an AK47 assault came out of the car and ordered Inspector Hatontola to park the vehicle at the police post.

The officers then led all of the three occupants into the inquiries office and then returned to search the vehicle to check what was inside only to find the above mentioned goods.

It was at this point that the officers then ordered Inspector Hatontola to go to the next office for questioning while the other two men were put in police cells.

After the interrogations, the officers offloaded all items from the vehicle and put them in the Inquiries Office, thanked the Inspector for giving them a tip-off of the crime which was in progress and set him free to drive back to Lusaka.

Wife Dumped Me For Being Jobless – Man Cries

0

Andrew Chabata from KweKwe is a devastated man after his wife Petronella Ruzwidzo Bungu allegedly ditched him because he was jobless and broke.

Chabata claimed Bungu divorced him due to her status as a breadwinner.

He made the startling claims at the Bulawayo Civil Court where his ex-wife had dragged him seeking a protection order against him claiming he was verbally and emotionally abusing her.

Bungu told the court that her ex-husband was also stalking her and threatening to go to her workplace and cause a scene as a way of embarrassing her.

“I want a protection order against my ex-husband. He is harassing me through text messages, phone calls and unannounced visits at my place. Last year he physically abused me and I want the court to grant me a protection order so that he stops harassing me,” begged Bungu.

She also claimed her ex-husband was also disturbing her peace by constantly phoning and sending messages to her mother.

In response, Chabata stated that his ex-wife’s application for a restraining order was just a plot to get him out of her life for good since he was not employed.

“Though I am not opposed to her application, the accusations she stated in the application are not true. I can, however, confirm that some time we exchanged harsh words because of her infidelity.

“The issue at hand is that I am not employed and I am not able to provide for her. She is now the breadwinner and I am now a liability to her hence the reason why she wants me out of her life,” responded Chabata.

His response didn’t go down well with Bungu who claimed that when Chabata married her, he didn’t tell her that he was married.

“We got married in 2016 and it was after he lied to me that he was divorced. When I found out that he had a wife, he told me that the wife was given to him by the elders. I tried to stay in that polygamous marriage but I failed to do because of his abuse.

“He put me under a lot of pressure and during that time I was at school and pregnant. He also didn’t want me to work yet he did not have enough money to look after me.

When I gave birth, he neglected me together with the child and I had to go back to my mother’s house. He once lied that he was in Afghanistan yet he was in Kwekwe enjoying with his first wife,” she narrated.

She said her ex-husband started accusing her of infidelity after she got a job.

“He started accusing me of cheating after I got a job in Government. When I terminated the relationship, he was not taking care of me and the child. He has also been abusing me. We never had peace in our marriage.

“He once found me a place to stay in Montrose and he was now bragging saying I was from the ghetto and I was now enjoying the luxury of staying in the low-density suburb. He would also not allow me to talk to men,” said Bhungu.

In her ruling presiding magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu ordered Chabata not to verbally and physically harass his ex-wife in any way.- B Metro

PEACE: TROUBLE ANYWHERE IS TROUBLE EVERYWHERE – HH

Thank you to His Majesty King Mswati III for the State banquet and messages of goodwill as I turned 60 years of age, today.

I am also thankful to all citizens across the globe for the messages of goodwill.

In our address during the State banquet, we stated that peace and stability is the prerequisite for economic development and that Africa and the World at large must uphold this.

We also indicated that it is high time Africans begun taking responsibility for various challenges we are faced with and that before we seek solutions elsewhere, we must first look within.

The narrative that Africa is a trouble maker and that Africans like fighting amongst themselves must be changed because trouble anywhere is trouble everywhere as we are witnessing in some parts of the World.

Fellow citizens. During our address and riding on the remarks by His Majesty King Mswati III that several of our brothers and sisters have made families in this Kingdom, we appealed to those residing herein and elsewhere (diaspora) to continue striving to be the best citizens as they are our country’s representatives.

Zambia is known to be peaceful and whilst in office, we are working hard to ensure that we can indeed add that other than peace, Zambia becomes to be known as a developed country.

Zambia is getting better and indeed will be better.

May God bless the people of Eswatini Kingdom and Zambia.

Bayete! Bayete! Siyabonga kakulu!

President of the Republic of Zambia.

Emmanuel Mwamba forced to drink his own Saliva

Emmanuel Mwamba forced to drink his own Saliva

PF aspiring presidential candidate and former Ambassador to the African Union and Ethiopia was last night made to drink his own Saliva. Mwamba appearing on TV Bakwetu with Masheke Akashambatwa on the popular punch for punch debate was challenged on all his popular theoretical claims. Masheke made Mwamba to repeat after him including when Masheke stated that the PF made calculated errors in selling Mopani copper mines for $1. Mwamba who has in recent months embarked on a campaign to force the New Dawn government to repossess the mopani mines was made to rethink his campaigns. Masheke challenged him that the PF made a mistake and the UPND should be allowed to fix those basic errors in a civilised way. Mwamba has seemed to suggest that the sale agreement should be ripped up and have the mines returned to the people of Zambia. Masheke challenged Mwamba that the mines are not run on air but requires substantial continues capital injections which our government cannot manage.

On corruption, Mwamba was made to condemn the corrupt practices which the PF indulged in. He also added his condemnation of the cadres in bus stations.

Mr. Mwamba whose joining of the PF has remained a mystery considering that he was working for the former MMD president Chiluba who was an enemy of the then opposition leader. When PF won the 2011 elections, Mwamba was one of the provincial ministers who was appointed outside the patriotic front structure. It has not been established how close Mwamba was to both Chiluba and Michael Sata when the two leaders were never friends at the the time Chiluba died.

Mwamba has also featured on several media platforms where he has appeared to just recite his political thesis with the interviewers barely challenging him. However, for the first time, Mwamba was left with a dry mouth that he visibly licked his slips to make saliva to drink. The man was for the first time reduced to a cadre that he seemed to have lost his direction. Towards the end of the debate, Mwamba had a connection disruption which we presume allowed him to drink some water. On resuming, he claimed that he disn’t know that his phone had run out of battery. However, Mwamba, like every rich person in Lusaka has a faster broadband and uninterrupted electricity supply.

Mwamba was also reminded to appreciate the freedom of speech which PF denied the people of Zambia. Overall, the debate was mature and a new approach to democratic debates in a civilised country. Well done to both of you

“My Marriage Is Only 3 Weeks But I’m Asking For Divorce” – Lady Cries Out

“My Marriage Is Only 3 Weeks But I’m Asking For Divorce” – Lady Cries Out
He was a lovely gentleman when we first met. He performed what was expected of him and said what was expected of him. When he asked me to be his girlfriend, I was overjoyed.

He spends a lot of time on the road because he is a driver. As a result, I treasured every moment we got to spend together. I treasured those times because they weren’t something I experienced every day.

I didn’t get to pay attention to certain things because we didn’t spend a lot of time together when we were dating. There were warning indications. I simply didn’t do anything with them.

He wouldn’t answer some phone calls in my presence, for example. And the times when I got too close to his phone and he freaked out. I had no intention of reading it, but the way he held the phone against me made me suspect.

Instead of paying attention to my gut, I dismissed it. “Things are fine,” I told myself. The ghosts I see are all in my head. They can’t possibly be real.”

I was ecstatic when Kojo asked me to marry him.

We didn’t spend a lot of time together when we were dating so I didn’t get to pay attention to certain things. The signs were there. I just didn’t make anything of them. Like how he wouldn’t receive certain phone calls in my presence. And the instances where he freaks out if I went near his phone. I never had the intention of going through it but the way he guarded the phone against me made me suspicious. Instead of listening to my instinct, I brushed it off. I told myself “Things are good. The ghosts I see are in my imagination. They can’t be real.”

When Kojo asked me to marry him I was over the moon.

I took him home to my family and they endorsed him. He introduced me to his family and they welcomed me with wide-open arms. They came to see my family and performed the knocking rites. His mother and his aunt really liked me. They called to check up on me regularly and I dared to think we were friends. Anytime Kojo’s sketchiness with his phone came to my mind, I banished it immediately; “Come on, his mother loves you. He is marrying you. He loves you so what do you have to fear?”

That’s how I silenced my doubts. We got married and later signed in court. Even after marriage, I still didn’t see any change in him. He still answered certain calls away from my ears. He guarded his phone as if it held the secrets to the universe. I decided to approach things with patience.

I couldn’t touch his phone but I could see the screen sometimes. I observed that the phone calls he ignores or goes away to answer belong to one particular number. I read his body language when the calls came through. He tenses up at first but then he answers and walks away from me. Sometimes, I stood somewhere he wouldn’t see me and watched him talk on the phone. He was often relaxed and chatty with the person as though I’m the one he was talking to.

I asked myself, “Since I am here who is he talking to?” I pushed away the thought that my husband might be cheating on me. After all, our marriage was too new for him to start cheating on me. One day, we were together when that particular number called again. Before he answered the call I asked “Who is that person calling you? I’ve observed that number. It calls you too often to be ordinary.” He said, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” He then walked out to receive the call.

know what you are talking about.” He then walked out to receive the call.

I got furious but I controlled myself. I knew it was just a matter of time before I found things out for myself. “A woman will know if she wants to know,” someone said that a few days ago.

One day, the number called again. Luckily for me, I was sitting in a place where I could look directly at the screen. Within a few seconds, I had engraved the number in my mind. I quickly dialed it on my phone and saved it.

After he finished talking to the number, I also called. The voice on the other side was a woman, just as I suspected. “Hello,” she said. I didn’t waste time on pleasantries. I went straight for the kill; “Hello, please who are you? And what’s your relationship with Kojo?” She answered confidently, “He’s my husband. Is there any problem? Who are you?” I responded, “I’m Kojo’s wife.” She didn’t believe what I said and I also didn’t believe her when she said my husband was her husband.

I said, “If you’re serious about what you’re saying then prove it.” She answered, “Don’t worry. I will send you a photo of our marriage certificate. I don’t know why you want to claim a man who is not yours.” Later, she sent me a photo of their certificate. It is true.

They are married. They’ve been married for eleven years while ours was only three weeks old. I called her again on the phone and we talked. She told me they have been trying to have kids but nothing had worked. Kojo’s family put a lot of pressure on him to take another wife but he refused to heed his family’s advice.

I was devastated. It hurt that he lied to me. It hurt more to find out that he only married me to make babies for him. He didn’t marry me out of love. He only needed someone to give him kids.

I felt foolish. I thought of how his family embraced me and asked myself, “So were they all part of the charade? I trusted them so why would they do this to me?”

I called his mother and asked her between sobs; “Why didn’t you tell me your son was already married? Why did you lie to me?” She tried to calm me but I wouldn’t hear of it. I kept asking questions after questions but she had no answer to any of them.

When Kojo came home, I rushed to him with the evidence. I asked the same questions I asked his mother. He didn’t act surprised. It looked like someone must have told him before he came home. He hasn’t said a word to dignify my questions.

I have been crying for days now. I know I shouldn’t have been too trusting of him but it’s not altogether my fault. I am not the one who married two women without telling either of them. This is not on me. I feel the urge to hurt myself but I won’t do it.

I will pick up the pieces of my life and move on. I know that I will be fine. I just feel so ashamed and betrayed right now. I don’t even know how I’m going to explain it to people without feeling stupid.

I have asked my family to return their drinks to them. Looking at what’s at hand, I don’t even think our marriage was valid in the first place. That notwithstanding, I have called for the annulment of our marriage.

His mother and his aunt are telling me not to be hasty in my decision to leave their son. Kojo himself hasn’t said anything to me. I hate the fact that he manipulated me with his lies so there is no way I am staying with him. I will heal and then I will give myself another chance to love again.

ZAMWORTH INFRASTRUCTURE DEAL AND AG

ZAMWORTH INFRASTRUCTURE DEAL AND AG

I have difficulty appreciating why the former Attorney General Likando Kalaluka is being maligned for stating that he can’t remember what happened with the purchase of the Minstry of Infrastructure building unless he is availed the documentation.

Fairness demands that Mr Kalaluka should have been availed the document to refresh his memory. Its not easy for anyone who deals with hundreds of correspondence to remember every document he or she signed years ago.

What I know is that the job of any Attorney General, even the current one, is to advise Government and not private persons. If Attorney General Kalalula advised the Ministry of Infrastructure on the contract of sale and on variations of the special conditions, I don’t see how that would be wrong if Government took up the burden to pay Property Transfer Tax for purposes of reducing the cost of the purchase price of the building during negotiations.

However, Governement must be encouraged to inquire into the purchase of the building but beginning to crucify people in a court of public opinion without availing them the information to reflect and give an informed position is unjust on its own.

Am as shocked as everyone that Government has incurred interest of $25 million due to contractual breaches on payments. This is where I support President Hichilema who frowned upon contracts which had punitive clauses that have robbed the country of millions of money in interests. This culture has to come to an end.

One contractor once told me the reason why Governement purchases things like paper which costs K90 at K250 is because Govt does not pay on time. So usually a business would have to factor in the profits that would have been made due to delays in Government paying. This is understandable and makes business sense.

However, am against the idea of contracts where government is penalised for delayed payments of down payments. Inflated purchase price is draining the treasury of much needed resources. Already the story of the chartered plan at an inflated cost by the Ministry of Youth, this is how Government loses money. The Ministry of Youth and Sport has not learnt anything at all from the past

Its Irresponsible For Uppz President Mr Chanda To Call Someone A Satanist When He Knows He Is Just Politicking – Hachingala

ITS IRRESPONSIBLE FOR UPPZ PRESIDENT MR CHANDA TO CALL SOMEONE A SATANIST WHEN HE KNOWS HE IS JUST POLITICKING – HACHINGALA (BIG GUY)

We are so much disappointed with Mr Chanda Charles the President of UPPZ whose video with accusations content on innocent people has gone viral.

The Bible is very clear that our almighty God detests a man who rushes to accuse a neighbor as stated in Hebrews and Proverbs. The Germans say “to claim is not to prove”.

We say so because to date the operations at black mountain have not recorded any death and as UPND we have made sure that safety is priority at the black mountain. Further as a rulling party we have not stoped any media house from covering any story from the black mountain as Mr Chanda claims. However, we have seen some accidents which have been some kilometers away from the black mountain as a result of some people climbing loaded trucks some of which are not from the black mountain. The trend of people stealing from loaded moving trucks is not new in KITWE and dates back before the black mountain and it’s unfair for some sections of the opposition to say it’s because of the black mountain.

To this end we engaged the Consortium and Zambia Police to control the situation so that we avoid further accidents as a City because every life is valuable. We will further continue engaging other stakeholders including communities around to find the lasting solution to the climbing of loaded trucks.

Therefore the unfounded claims by Mr Chanda that there have been deaths recorded at the black mountain are meant to tarnish the image of the President and our Mines Minister. We want to warn Mr Chanda to have boundaries in his politicking because inciting residents of Kitwe and Zambians against the leaders out of falsehood and politicking is a crime and can easily be prosecuted in our Courts.

Mr Chanda should limit his excitement of the freedom of expression which President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND Government have restored. It’s very irresponsible for Mr Chanda to call other Citizens Satanists and this kind of politics will not be entertained on the Copperbelt.

As Copperbelt Youths we are monitoring Mr Chanda’s moves and if he continues on this path he will soon be treated with political measures he is calling for himself. Copperbelt Youths will not tolerate politicking empowerment programs for our Youths, Women and the Communities.

We further advice Mr Chanda to stay away from our leaders for his own benefits especially the Head of State and Cabinet Ministers.

Congolese Citizens Hold protest against Paul Kagame and the Rwandan govt

0

The tiff between D.R.C and Rwanda has stirred unrest in Kinshasa as scores of masses went into the capital streets to denounce Paul Kagame and the Rwandan government. President Kagame is being implicated by the D.R.C government for sponsoring rebel activities in the North Kivu region. The protests come just a day after the African Union Chairperson Senegalese President Macky Sall had a tele-conversation with the warring leaders, imploring them to negotiate for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis.

The anti-Rwanda protest is said to have been initiated by a Congolese nationalist civil society group NDSCI. Hundreds of people who participated in the protest were seen waving placards and fliers with nationalist messages and pro-D.R.C slogans. Some of them had castigatory inscriptions against President Kagame and the Rwandan Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is understood that the demonstrators are against the Rwandan ‘political and military’ influence in Congo. One of the banners was branded “Congo is our country… not a single centimeter will go to Rwanda.”

The demonstrators held candles and shouted slogans against Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Some members of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress party, the oldest and ruling party in the D.R.C have pledged to back the government and FARDC (the Congolese army) in the armed struggle against the M23 rebels. The youths in particular are ready to do military service to defend the country, said Pasi Nkoyi a UDPS party official.

Relations between the two countries soured since the mass arrival in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo of Rwandan Hutus accused of slaughtering Tutsis during the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Relations began to thaw after DRC President Felix Tshisekedi took office in 2019 but the recent resurgence of M23 violence has reignited tensions, exacerbated by the detention of two Rwandan soldiers in Congo.

The recent armed confrontation between the Congolese army and the M23 rebels who are believed to the linked to ISIL has been an ongoing warfare. At least 73 thousand civilians have been displaced, some seeking refuge in the neighbouring countries Rwanda and Uganda. Meanwhile, Kinshasa has made repeated allegations that Rwanda was backing the M23 – a primarily Congolese Tutsi group after clashes between its fighters and the Congolese army broke out last week in the North Kivu province, which borders Rwanda.

In the latest rebel attack the Red Cross record that 16 people were killed, seven wounded and vehicles were torched during a night raid in the volatile east. One of those killed is reported to be a humanitarian Red Cross worker. He was shot as he was trying to flee the war zone. The cancer of rebel groups in the eastern part of D.R.C has insisted for a winding period spurning over a decade. The D.R.C eastern region is very infamous for inhabiting scores of hostile rebels that sporadically initiate uprisings against the government of the day.

The M23 revolt peaked in 2012 and 2013 when it captured large parts of North Kivu province in eastern DRC. In this rebellious venture, the M23 briefly seized Goma before being defeated and driven out of the country by Congolese troops backed by UN peacekeepers (MONUSCO). Following its defeat, the M23 signed an agreement with Kinshasa that included provisions for its fighters’ reintegration into civilian society. However, the group has accused the government of breaching the agreement once more, and fighting has resumed.

LUNGU MUST HEAL …HH owes Lungu no apology, says Mposha

LUNGU MUST HEAL

…HH owes Lungu no apology, says Mposha

By Kombe Mataka/ The Mast

WATER development minister Mike Mphosha says if former president Edgar Lungu wants to shun state functions he must do so without maligning the government.

Mposha noted that Lungu did not attend both the Africa Day commemoration and commissioning of the Kenneth Kaunda Wing of the Mulungushi International Conference Centre (MICC) built by China.

He said the former president had a right to exercise his freedom of association and assembly “or not” but that he should not make false claims that the government had organised cadres to embarrass him at the two events.

“Edgar Lungu must heal. Time has passed. The train has passed. There is another team now to clean up the mess that PF created. They don’t have to justify the shunning of the event. If they want to shun state functions, let them do it. I think these are their freedoms. We all have a freedom to associate or not to but don’t go out and try to dissuade, mislead, maligning government by saying they are hiring people,” he said. “President HH [Hakainde Hichilema] is too busy to play that kind of politics. This country has moved away from petty politics. This country has moved to the politics through which people can better their lives socially and economically. That is our focus. Let them not draw us into petty politics. We want to change how people will perceive Zambia in the next five years and beyond.”

Mposha said the UPND had no business in embarrassing Lungu because the Zambians who are the masters already embarrassed him on August 2021.

“I don’t have a problem if he shuns state functions but to go and issue statements even challenging the state to show proof that he was invited and to issue a statement that people mobilised to try and embarrass him! UPND has no business in embarrassing any PF member or the former president. What I know is that the former president Lungu was already embarrassed by Zambians on August 12 who made a decision to vote him out. He must not blame everybody. The Zambians are the masters who employ political leaders,” he said.

“I know it takes time to heal but look at RB (Rupiah Banda). Let him learn from him. RB lost elections in 2011. He was taken to court by PF but he still attended state functions. When Zambia won the Africa Cup in 2012, [then vice-president Dr] Guy Scott and Rupiah Banda were sent to receive the trophy. He represented the government and came with the trophy and we think that as UPND we have no time for ‘co cise’ (baseless) type of politics. We are busy cleaning up the mess which they left.”

Mposha, who is also Munali UPND member of parliament, said the reference to President Hichilema’s refusal to attend state functions when he was in opposition was unnecessary.

“They are also reminding us of how President Hakainde Hichilema shunned State functions when he was in the opposition. First of all, the debate is very unnecessary considering the fact that the projects we are talking about were contracted out of tax payer’s money. These projects were built out of tax payer’s money, and when you look at the conference facility it was a gift from China. Now that gift came about because of the good relationship that exits between the Republic of China and the Republic of Zambia. Nothing personal or nothing to do with PF or Edgar Lungu or when the project started because Zambia has been there from 1964. The relationship that Zambia enjoys with China came in long before Edgar Lungu. Long before he even thought of being in leadership or before anyone thought of forming PF. We owe our appreciations to the founding fathers,” he said.

“HH owes Lungu no apology. Between the two, it is actually HH who should have been apologised to for what he was made to go through. HH has created an unprecedented style of leadership where when we meet our colleagues in PF regalia there is no fight. We wave and greet each other and that is what we want and this is an environment which when Edgar Lungu was given chance to rule the country failed to provide. There were places that you could not step in if you were a known UPND member or wearing any red colour. Now we don’t have to remind Edgar Lungu about all these things. Sometimes it is important to take off one’s pride and face reality as it is. HH shunned events because he was being blocked from even attending funerals. He was being blocked from landing at the airport.”

Mposha warned that the end of PF would be very disastrous because of the style of leadership of “listening only to themselves”.

“Edgar Lungu’s attitude of playing to the gallery, to the cadres, is not helping PF. Yes, Zambians understand that it is not UPND alone, we are in a multiparty dispensation but at the rate he is going the PF will remain totally irrelevant. Look at the rate at which people are resigning from PF! If you saw at the funeral of Alexander Chikwanda, I was part of the delegation of the Vice-President [Mutale Nalumango] and they went all out to politicise that funeral. They shout ‘alebwelelapo! (he’s coming back to power)! Now if that is representative of the feelings of Zambians, he would not be where he is today,” said Mposha. “If the money that they borrowed to build infrastructure was properly accounted for, Zambians would have been very happy and PF would have still been relevant to the discourse of this country. But because of political violence, the tribal politics they had created, the corruption which was going on, all these things displeased Zambians and they decided that we wanted another political party. So anyone who wants us to be clapping for PF for the construction of that conference facility or any other project is missing the point.”

Free Andsen Zulu, a great injustice has been committed in our land!- Azwell Banda

Free Andsen Zulu, a great injustice has been committed in our land!

” It is a perfectly legitimate and fair comment to say that Hakainde Hichilema is an antiChrist, in Zambia, a country which has declared itself a Christian nation.”

By Azwell Banda

It is impossible for Jesus Christ to be happy with magistrate Chrispine Hampungani for jailing Andsen Zulu for 12 months, for saying that Hakainde Hichilema is an antichrist, a non-believer in Christ.

Such an assertion is perfectly logical, especially in a country that has declared itself to be a Christian nation. In the Holy Bible Jesus Christ categorically says it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person, such as Hakainde Hichilema, to enter the kingdom of God.

Therefore, it is a perfectly rational belief to assert that Hakainde Hichilema is an antichrist, an unbeliever in Jesus Christ.

Intimidated by being arrested and detained by the police, bullied and overcome with fear by finding himself in court accused of having defamed a popular president, representing himself, Andsen Zulu foolishly perhaps, hoped that not wasting the court’s time and quickly admitting to the charge would see him reprimanded at the most, and lightly punished, for his comments.

It is in such cases where magistrates and judges and all judicial officers are expected to be extremely careful, they do not permit a suspect to unwittingly incriminate themselves, when in fact the facts before the court do not amount to a crime! But magistrate Chrispine Hampungani was having none of this caution: the poor man was swiftly jailed for an incredible 12 months!

Perched right on top of the preamble of our Constitution, is the declaration that Zambia is a Christian nation: “WE, THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA: ACKNOWLEDGE the supremacy of God Almighty; DECLARE the Republic a Christian Nation while upholding a person’s right to freedom of conscience, belief or religion.”

It is God Almighty, and not money, we acknowledge to be supreme. And yet Andsen Zulu, precisely because he has no money, could not buy an experienced and clever lawyer to argue his case against Hakainde Hichilema, who is a rich man and the President of Zambia, has been swiftly dispatched to prison, obviously to also frighten all poor people without money not to say anything presumed negative or defamatory, against Hakainde Hichilema.

Leviticus 19:15, clearly says “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbour.”

Magistrate Chrispine Hampungani has gone down in our history books as a magistrate who sent a poor worker to jail for saying something perfectly rational and defensible, against Hakainde Hichilema.

This magistrate has sent shivers down the spines of all those who may wish to express, on any platform including social media and newspapers, any criticism against Hakainde Hichilema.

By this one totally unchristian treatment and judgement of Andsen Zulu, magistrate Chrispine Hampungani has struck a lethal blow upon a most sacred of all rights, the right to free expression, a corollary of the right to free conscience and free thought; the very essence of the right to life.

We are alive because we think. We prove that we think by expressing our thoughts. To murder free speech is therefore to threaten human life itself. Why did the magistrate ignore the Bible by which our laws and dispensation of justice must also be tempered?

For the avoidance of doubt, the Holy Bible is rich with evidence which supports the assertion that it is impossible to be a Christian and a rich person at the same time.

Other systems of faith, morality and humane ideologies have also come to the same conclusion – that it is impossible to serve two masters at the same time, for either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. The Holy Bible is more explicit and it bluntly says: “You cannot serve God and money”.

Andsen Zulu was not only well within his constitutional rights in a self-declared Christian nation to assert that Hakainde Hichilema who is rich, is an antichrist, but, as I must assume he himself is a Christian, it is also his duty to alert others to this fact, the fact of a rich president who certainly is headed for hell, unless he sells all that he has, and gives it all to the poor, because only then shall he have wealth in heaven; and then of course he can follow Jesus!

The law of defamation of the President is an ugly piece of our colonial legacy which every opposition leader since Kenneth Kaunda has promised to repeal when in opposition and quickly ignored this promise when in power; for it is a great lethal law to shield the President from criticism and exposure of weaknesses.

It also helps perpetuate our backward attitude to politicians who only yesterday were begging for votes and upon being elected, suddenly become removed from their origins as vote beggars and thence must be treated like loyalty in a republican democracy.

This obnoxious law facilitates the perpetuation of ignorance, fear and impotence (taken together mistaken for respect of the President) among the public of a person they have made President of the country through the ballot. It promotes sycophancy, fawning and ingratiating fake adulation of the President by his followers who are usually parasitic on this person, and it is clearly unconstitutional as it is not a law of general application and it kills democracy. It stunts the development of a vibrant democratic culture of a freely thinking and talking citizenry. In this day and age of social media, it is a useless piece of legislation incapable of consistent enforcement. It must be removed from our statutes.

This law itself, reads, “Any person who, with intent to bring the President into hatred, ridicule or contempt, publishes any defamatory or insulting matter, whether by writing, print, word of mouth or in any other manner, is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years.” That is all. There are no definitions of the key words: intent, hatred, ridicule, contempt, defamatory or insulting. Obviously, there are English judgements a clever defence lawyer can use to argue in court; Andsen Zulu, a mere driver, had absolutely no way of knowing this.

This law is a powerful weapon for any president against real and imaginary opponents and critics, for the choirs of a reigning president, and for the police and magistrates and judges wanting to catch the eye of a reigning president: any criticism of the president can be presumed to have been uttered or published with the intent to bring the President into hatred, ridicule or contempt.
Has magistrate Chrispine Hampungani opened wide prison doors for any expression of negative thoughts about Hakainde Hichilema? Maybe not. Has Hampungani emboldened Hakainde’s zealots and choirs in and outside the police to harass anyone expressing a negative opinion against Hakainde Hichilema? Yes. Andsen Zulu could not have been a more perfect gift to these enemies of free speech and democracy.

Barely a year in office, Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND choir are fast resurrecting and inventing new ways of protecting and shielding Hakainde Hichilema from negative commentary and perfectly well-earned criticism.

The police have already defended the practice of being summoned in some remote part of Zambia, away from one’s location, to answer charges and attend court sessions. Almost a year in office, Hakainde Hichilema and his government have not produced a road map to deliver on their promises to deal with aspects of the Constitution and laws abhorrent to our Republic and its fledgling democracy. Hakainde’s government though, has not wasted time signing a Staff Level Agreement with the IMF (a very complex epoch defining matter which should have been transparent and involved the whole country, and whose full details are still a secret), amending tax for rich miners, removing VAT exemptions from newspapers and cooking oil, removing fuel and electricity subsidies, removing export duty from several food stuffs, removing import duty from agricultural equipment and machinery and creating conditions for the re-entry into Zambia by Anglo American Corporation, among other things favourable to himself and his friends both in Zambia and abroad.

It is a perfectly legitimate and fair comment to say that Hakainde Hichilema is an antiChrist, in Zambia, a country which has declared itself a Christian nation. Zambia has fast slid into a country whose future now begins to look darker than the Patriotic Front days. It is time to defend our human and constitutional rights, from the fast-creeping anti-democratic, prefeudal practices, now on full display every day.
Free Andsen Zulu from jail, he is an innocent worker! He is blessed because he is poor and his is the true kingdom of God, so says the Bible.

Arbitration Clauses

0

By Dickson Jere

A Zambian company was sub-contracted by an international firm to do some works in Zambia. The two signed contracts in which they agreed to refer any disputes to arbitration to be held in Spain before the Spanish Court of Arbitration. Few months into contract, a dispute arose over payment and works done at the site in Zambia.

The Zambian company sued in the High Court for Zambia demanding that the case be held in Zambia because it was a Zambian dispute as well as all witnesses were in Zambia. So the convenient forum for the parties was Zambia. It further argued that the Court should approve the appointment of a Zambian Arbitrator and that it will be cheaper.

On the other hand, the international company opposed the application and emphasized that once arbitration clauses have been signed by the parties, they cannot be altered by the Courts. In other ways, arbitration clauses are binding on the parties and must be followed to the later! In this case, it was vehemently argued that Parties must adhere to the terms and refer the case to Spain.

High Court Judge Wilson Mweemba had to decide this case based on the principles of arbitration law and forum convenience.

“I agree with Mr. (Dickson) Jere’s argument that although the dispute arose in Zambia, the Parties are in Zambia and the witnesses are in Zambia, the arbitration will be held in Spain…,” said Judge Mweemba in his Ruling.

“Courts lack jurisdiction to alter arbitration agreement agreed upon and signed by the Parties,” he further said and referred the case to the Spanish Court of Arbitration.

On forum convenience being Zambia, this is what the Judge said:
“The legal doctrine of forum conveniens does not apply to arbitration since the parties choose the arbitrators to adjudicate their disputes,” Judge Mweemba said.

Always read through the arbitration clauses before signing the contract or indeed seek counsel from lawyers. Most international companies come with standard contracts whereby arbitration clauses refer the dispute to the country of origin. Pay attention – the devil is in the detail.

I hope my students will read the full text of the Ruling for further discourse on arbitration law vs forum convenience.

Corby Mayor Carried Around In Traditional Celebrations

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Midlands Corby UK | Again history was made today when Corby town celebrated the Corby Poll Fair marking the Queens Platinum Jubilee. The sun is shining, the crowds were up with the larks and the Corby Pole Fair got under way without a hitch at 6am sharp.

The bells of St John the Baptist Church in Corby Old Village had been ringing since 5am to signal the start of the 2022 Corby Pole Fair.Hundreds of locals turned out to hear the first Charter Reading by the Parliament Stone outside the church. Rev Paul Frost – as is tradition – was given the honour of reading the Charter granted to the village in 1585 by Queen Elizabeth I.

Afterwards, Rev Frost, Zimbabwean born mayor Tafadwa Chikoto and the village’s oldest resident June Thomson were lifted aloft and carried through the streets of the village where the charter was again read outside the White Hart and in The Jamb.

The Pole Fair is a major community celebration, which took place today Friday 3rd June 2022. This date links the original granting of the Royal Charter to Corby by Queen Elizabeth I in 1585 with the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend, created to celebrate the long years of service by Queen Elizabeth II.

Tafadzwa Chikoto

This unique tradition comes around only every 20 years, attracting large crowds to enjoy outdoor attractions, entertainment and of course, the reading of the Royal Charter at the three entrances to the village at dawn.
There are lots of historical stories associated with the Pole Fair, from its evolution as a small Viking settlement, to the right to hold fairs granted by King Henry III in 1226, and the story of why Elizabeth I granted the Corby Charter after an accident in a bog. This year’s event was telling these stories through a variety of engaging activities, including a pageant, a living history encampment as well as Open Days at Corby Heritage Centre for visitors to explore Pole Fair archives dating back to 1902.

There are numerous other traditions that take place at every fair, including floral gateways to the old village area of Corby, a greasy pole competition and a roast ox. Previous fairs have also included markets, performances, historical re-enactments and a large fun fair.

All visitors to Corby village are also expected to pay a small toll to enter the fair on the day, or risk ending up in the village stocks! The fair was being organised by a steering group of local volunteers and cultural organisations.
The Corby Pole Fair celebrates the granting of Corby’s Royal Charter in 1585 by Queen Elizabeth I as well as celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. There was a community breakfast, a picnic, music, dance, walkabout performers, a carnival parade, funfair and lots lots more!
Mayor Chikoto carried the Zimbabwean flag high as he was carried by four brave men around the Corby village to wild cheers and celebratory claps from the people.
As part of entertainment the
Academy students put on a spectacular pageant bringing to life the story of Corby’s charter.

The pupils told the tale of how Elizabeth I had an accident in woodland near Corby and was rescued by villagers. She later granted a charter to the village.

The play is from an original script by Elspeth Robb, written in 1947.

Corby is proud to have a diversity of leadership in its council.
