PEOPLE PROPOSING THESE MINISTRIES MUST HAVE BEEN DRINKING TOO MUCH ALCOHOL SAYS LAURA MITI.

Human rights activist and democracy advocate Laura Miti has questioned the proposed restructuring of government ministries, suggesting that some of the ideas sound like they were developed at a function where alcohol was flowing freely.

Reacting to a list of proposed ministries circulating on social media, Ms. Miti said she was shocked by the apparent splitting of functions that should ordinarily fall under the same ministry.

She wondered whether Zambia had discovered oil to justify creating a Ministry of Petroleum and questioned what officials in the proposed Ministries of Technology and Industry would be doing throughout the day.

“Ministry of Petroleum, we have found oil? What will the Technology and Industry Ministries be doing all day? Did Housing say it’s not infrastructure?” she asked.

Ms. Miti also questioned the proposed Ministry of Trade and Exports, wondering whether those behind the proposal believed trade only referred to local business.

She suggested that some of the proposed ministries appeared unnecessary and could simply be an attempt to create more government positions.

“These portfolios sound like they were proposed at a function where a lot of alcohol was flowing. Or where people were randomly creating jobs for themselves,” she remarked.

The outspoken activist further mocked the proposed separation of Culture and Arts, questioning the reasoning behind creating distinct portfolios for functions that are closely related.

Her remarks come amid discussions surrounding President Hakainde Hichilema’s proposed realignment of government ministries.

However, Ms. Miti’s criticism was directed at a circulating list of proposed ministries whose authenticity she had not confirmed.
