PRICE OF A LOAF OF BREAD IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES
By Koswe Business Reporter
(The price of a loaf of bread is often used as a measure of the cost of living and inflation.)
Average loaf of bread prices in various African countries:
South Africa 🇿🇦 – R14.00 (0.77 USD)
Namibia 🇳🇦 – N$14.00 (0.77 USD)
Botswana 🇧🇼 – P9.07 (0.68 USD)
Zambia 🇿🇲 – ZK16 (0.80 USD)
Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 – US$1.00
Angola 🇦🇴 – Kz 709.10 (1.40 USD)
Mozambique 🇲🇿 – 71 MZN (1.11 USD)
Malawi 🇲🇼 – MK1500 (1.50 USD)
Eswatini 🇸🇿 – E16.73 (0.92 USD)
Lesotho 🇱🇸 – M13.00 (0.72 USD)
What is the source of these prices? Shoprite? Otherwise the price of a loaf of ordinary bread ranges between K25 and K28 in many areas of Zambia.
Where in Zambia do you live? The Price of Bonfwa bread where I live is ZMK21. And this is most expensive of the Bonfwa brand. The rest are between ZMK19 and ZMK20. So even Shoprite should be even lower than you suggest.
Also factor that prices may have gone up in the last week since the ZESCO 3hr power schedule and it takes much longer than 3hrs to bake a loaf of bread. From the mixing of dry ingredients, the raising of the dough to the actual baking and power is used all these stages. And any sane business doesnt operate like Zesco. The run to make a profit.
Lucky you! Where I live the cheapest bread is the Shoprite one at around K16. The rest of the bakeries charge in the range that I showed earlier. I guess because of the reasons that you have ably stated.
A contradiction to your orginal statement. Lets be consistent in our statements
