Putin Accuses Western Powers of Pushing Africa Into Debt Dependency
Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Western countries of using sanctions, economic pressure and what he described as unfair lending terms to maintain influence over African nations.
Speaking at the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on October 28, Putin said Western powers were resisting the emergence of a multipolar world and attempting to push African countries back into debt dependency.
He argued that financial arrangements imposed on African nations could burden their long-term development, while accusing Western powers of continuing colonial-era patterns of economic exploitation.
Putin contrasted the West’s approach with Russia’s stated commitment to expanding cooperation with African countries, including technology transfers, local industrial production, agriculture and infrastructure development.
The summit brings together delegations from 48 African countries as Moscow seeks to deepen its political, economic and military ties across the continent.
Putin’s remarks reflect Russia’s effort to position itself as an alternative partner for African nations amid wider geopolitical competition with Western powers.
