Qatar demanded on Thursday that Iran provide reparations for its “illegal acts” against Doha, including “all damages and losses” resulting from Tehran’s attacks on the Gulf Arab state during the war.
“These illegal actions by the Islamic Republic of Iran entail international responsibility … to provide compensation for all damages incurred by the State of Qatar,” Qatar said in its latest letter to the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council, adding that “all damages and losses resulting from the attacks will be assessed by the competent authorities.”
The letter has also renewed Qatar’s call upon the Security Council to uphold its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security and to take the necessary measures to halt the “serious violations and deter its perpetrators.” The letter emphasized that the targets of the Iranian attacks have been of “purely civilian nature” which accounts as a violation of international law.
Qatar has been subject to Iranian attacks, which Tehran says are due to Doha’s connections to the United States. Other Gulf states which harbor US bases have also come under Iranian and missile drone attacks, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
A global energy powerhouse, Qatar has faced production and supply disruptions caused by the war. QatarEnergy’s CEO told Reuters last month that Iranian attacks have wiped 17% of Qatar’s liquified natural gas (LNG) export capacity, causing an estimated $20 billion in lost annual revenue and threatening supplies to Europe and Asia.
Iran has also demanded war reparations from the US and Israel.
