RAMAPHOSA SAYS APARTHEID LEFT SOUTH AFRICA WITH DEEPLY UNEQUAL MUNICIPALITIES, WHERE SOME COMMUNITIES INHERITED WEALTH AND DEVELOPED INFRASTRUCTURE WHILE OTHERS WERE LEFT WITH POVERTY AND LIMITED RESOURCES!

President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted the lasting impact of apartheid on South Africa’s municipalities, arguing that the country inherited a local government system shaped by decades of racial inequality.

He pointed out that historically privileged areas had stronger municipal finances, better infrastructure and greater economic opportunities, while many disadvantaged communities were left with limited resources and inadequate basic services.

According to Ramaphosa, this unequal foundation created a major challenge for the democratic government, which inherited the responsibility of transforming municipalities and expanding access to services and economic opportunities for all South Africans.

His remarks bring renewed attention to the ongoing debate about service delivery, municipal inequality and whether enough has been done to address the economic and infrastructure gaps created by apartheid.

Do you believe South Africa has made sufficient progress in correcting these historical inequalities, or do the same divisions remain visible in communities today?
