RIOTERS SCALE JOAN OF ARC STATUE AS PARIS DESCENDS INTO LOOTING AND CLASHES DURING MASS PROTESTS

Joan of Arc led French forces against English occupation during the Hundred Years’ War. She was captured, tried, and burned at the stake in 1431 at age 19. Centuries later she was canonized and remains a national and religious symbol of French resistance, courage, and identity.

On October 17, 2026, during nationwide protests against the cost of living that drew roughly 550,000 people according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez (organizers claimed higher figures), a man climbed the equestrian statue of Joan of Arc at Place des Pyramides in central Paris. Video from the scene shows the individual positioned on the horse amid a nighttime crowd filming with phones. Similar scenes occurred at other monuments, including protesters scaling the Marianne statue at Place de la République.

The demonstrations, involving students, unions, and others, began as marches but turned violent in multiple cities. Authorities reported hundreds of arrests, clashes with police, looted shops, burned vehicles, and attacks on buildings. Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire stated that whole streets had been devastated. French officials attributed much of the organized violence to radical far-left elements operating on the margins of the protests.

The image of a figure scaling the statue of the woman who fought to free France from foreign control has circulated widely. Commentators noted the contrast between Joan of Arc’s historical role and scenes of disorder targeting symbols of French history and identity in the capital. Separate earlier incidents in 2026 included a man tearing the sword from a different Joan of Arc statue in Place Saint-Augustin.

France faces elections in 2027 to replace President Emmanuel Macron. The scale of the October 17 unrest, one of the largest protest days in recent years, has intensified debates over public order, economic pressures, and the treatment of national monuments.
