ROBERT REICH CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT SEIZURE OF SPACEX AND STARLINK IN OPEN ATTACK ON ELON MUSK

Robert Reich, the former Clinton labor secretary and longtime progressive activist, has openly called for Democrats to begin laying the groundwork to nationalize SpaceX and Starlink. In a clip highlighted by Collin Rugg, Reich stated that Democrats ought to start preparing to turn these companies into public corporations to curb Musk’s influence.

Rugg posted the remarks with a pointed question: does Reich want Musk to drop another $50 million on the midterms? The suggestion is clear. Threatening to seize private companies that have delivered reusable rockets, global satellite internet, and critical national security capabilities is a direct invitation for Musk and other business owners to fight back politically.

This is not a policy debate about regulation or competition. It is a call to treat successful private enterprise as something the government can simply claim once it becomes too large or too independent. Starlink has provided connectivity in disaster zones and conflict areas. SpaceX has restored American dominance in launch capacity after years of reliance on foreign providers. Reich’s response is to put them under public control.

Elon Musk responded directly to the post, writing that stealing companies is a serious crime and that Reich should face prison. The exchange underscores the stakes. Proposals to nationalize major private firms do not stay theoretical. They signal that property rights and the results of private investment can be overridden by political preference.

Reich has long argued that concentrated private power threatens democracy and that government should intervene more aggressively in large businesses. His latest statement applies that view to the companies Musk built. Critics see it as confirmation that opposition to Musk is less about any specific policy and more about an unwillingness to accept that private innovation can outperform government-run alternatives.

The remarks arrive as Democrats continue to debate Musk’s role in politics and technology. Rather than competing with SpaceX and Starlink through better policy or rival private efforts, the suggested path is to begin the process of taking them over. That approach has been tried with other industries in other countries, usually with lower efficiency, slower innovation, and greater political control over service decisions.

Rugg’s framing captures the practical result. Calls to nationalize a successful private company tend to mobilize the people who own and run it. Whether that produces larger political spending, as Rugg suggests, remains to be seen. What is already visible is the explicit proposal: start preparing now to make SpaceX and Starlink public corporations.
