RUSSIAN DIESEL HEADS FOR AMERICA AS TRUMP OPENS THE DOOR TO PUTIN’S EXPORTS
Three tankers carrying approximately 140,000 tonnes of Russian diesel are heading toward American ports under the Trump administration’s sanctions relief, according to the Financial Times. Two of the vessels are under sanctions, including Talisman, reportedly designated by Washington, London and the European Union.
The shipments have not yet arrived. Their anticipated destinations and schedules could change, but the political decision enabling this trade has already been made.
American lawmakers are warning banks, port authorities and fuel companies about potential legal consequences. The administration maintains that its authorisation is lawful; congressional critics argue that Russian petroleum imports conflict with restrictions enacted into American law. Companies involved could face investigations and litigation.
The strategic contradiction is stark. Ukraine is fighting to reduce the resources available to Russia’s war machine while Washington creates an opening for Russian fuel sales. Export earnings sustain Russia’s economy and the state waging this war, even if individual payments cannot be traced to particular missiles.
Putin remains wanted by the International Criminal Court over the alleged unlawful deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children. Yet his government is being offered renewed access to American customers while Russian attacks continue.
