SANGWA INSISTS RUNNING MATES NOMINATION ILLEGAL

    By DARIUS CHOONYA

Constitutional lawyer, John Sangwa has insisted that the nomination of 16 presidential running mates is illegal and must be declared null and void.

In making his submissions before a full bench of nine Constitutional Court judges, Mr. Sangwa explains that the way the nomination of the running mates was done contravenes Article 100 clause 1 of the Constitution.
He has argued that the Article requires that the Presidential running mates are required to be supported by at least 100 supporters from each provinces before filing their nomination papers.

The Petitioners further argue that the respondents have also not paid the nomination fees as per Constitutional requirement.

But Attorney General Likando Kalaluka has argued that the plea by the petitioners must be dismissed, stating that Article 52 clause 4 of the Constitution does not prescribe for running mates to be challenged.

Mr. Kalaluka says the running mates are not elected but chosen by Presidential Candidates.

The court has since set June 10, 2021 as a date for judgement.
